Review: Road to the Sun by Keira Andrews

A desperate father. A lonely ranger. Unexpected love that can’t be denied.

Jason Kellerman’s life revolves around his eight-year-old daughter. Teenage curiosity with his best friend led to Maggie’s birth, her mother tragically dying soon after. Insistent on raising his daughter himself, he was disowned by his wealthy family and has worked tirelessly to support Maggie—even bringing her west on a dream vacation. Only twenty-five, Jason hasn’t had time to even think about romance. So the last thing he expects is to question his sexuality after meeting an undeniably attractive park ranger.

Ben Hettler’s stuck. He loves working in the wild under Montana’s big sky, but at forty-one, his love life is non-existent, his ex-boyfriend just married and adopted, and Ben’s own dream of fatherhood feels impossibly out of reach. He’s attracted to Jason, but what’s the point? Besides the age difference and skittish Jason’s lack of experience, they live thousands of miles apart. Ben wants more than a meaningless fling.

Then a hunted criminal takes Maggie hostage, throwing Jason and Ben together in a desperate and dangerous search through endless miles of mountain forest. If they rescue Maggie against all odds, can they build a new family together and find a place to call home?

Road to the Sun is a May-December gay romance from Keira Andrews featuring adventure, angst, coming out, sexual discovery, and of course a happy ending.

5 Hearts? NO! ALL THE HEARTS! Including my less than perfect one because this book gets them all!!!

Okay. I am going to warn you right now, this will be one hell of a rambling review because this book has left me strung out. I finished it, less than 20 minutes ago and I already have over 2,000 words and notes that have been transcribed from my recordings of thoughts. I had to record them last night on my way to yoga and this morning as I drove my boys to school. There was no time to actually write anything down but I had to get it out so I wouldn’t forget how I was feeling. Pish Posh! As if I could forget a single word or emotion this book gave me.

So, this book starts off with a bang of a prologue that I wasn’t expecting and one that had me wondering where it would all fit in. Once we get into the first chapter, I kinda forgot about what happened because you know, we get Jason Kellerman with his adorable daughter Maggie meeting the hunky Park Ranger Ben Hettler.

I have to take a quick moment to say how much I loved the setting of Glacier National Park in Montana. The park and specifically Lake McDonald (which you drive through the area to get to “Going-to-the-Sun Road” aka “Road to the Sun”) are on my bucket list and my phone’s background is of the gorgeously multicolored stones that show through the crystal clear water of the lake. It’s breathtaking in pictures and I can only imagine the lake, the stones and the park under the big sky is nothing less than stunning in person.

But back to the book.

Jason Kellerman is a 25 year old single father to 8 year old Maggie who is on vacation in Glacier National Park from Philadelphia. The pair is there because the park is young Maggie’s dream come true. You see, Maggie loves nature, the outdoors and everything that comes between the dirt and rocks under her feet to the trees, mountains and birds that line the sky. It’s her dream to be there and Jason is extremely fond of making Maggie’s dreams come true. Jason is a young father, having conceived Maggie with his best friend Amy during a fumbling encounter so Amy would have her first time with someone she trusted. The first time produced Maggie and shortly after her birth, an accident took the life of Amy and her parents. While almost everyone, including his own family, suggested that Jason either give Maggie up or let his parents raise her as his sister, Jason refused and set out to make a life raising his infant daughter on his own.

Jason’s issues with doing everything for his daughter are not foreign to me. It’s actually quite easy to get so wrapped up in your child and being the good parent, for whatever reason, that you lose sight of who you are. You are this new label, this new name of Dad and that is all that matters because your child, this innocent being that relies on you for just about everything has become your world and you end up revolving around them. But a tight and constant revolution can throw off the entire balance of the body, mind and spirit and that is where Jason currently resides. He just doesn’t realize it until he meets Ben.

Told in dual POV’s we know that Jason is fond of Ben when they meet and Ranger Ben leads a group on a hike and not only tolerates Maggie’s endless questions and on point answers, he seems to genuinely like interacting with her. We get Ben’s perspective right away and his thoughts on not only the young father – who is not his usual type – but Maggie as well warmed my heart. I adored Ben and when we learn that his long term boyfriend left him for the glitz and glamour of a Hollywood actor and became all that he and Ben were supposed to be, it broke my heart. Ben is left floundering with who he is and stuck in a town and a job that's been all he’s known. He hasn't stepped outside of what he wanted or where he thought he should be until he meets Jason and lovely, lovely Maggie. Only then does he start to realize that the instant attraction and protectiveness he has with Jason, this want/need to teach Maggie… these things are everything that Ben has been looking for his entire life and finally finds in a man and his daughter on vacation who showed up for a group hike. Ben, in a way reminds me of my husband who places family on the top all lists he could ever make. The man wanted nothing more but to be married and have children from the time he was a teen and Ben is the same way. At 41 years old, the ruggedly handsome park ranger is more than ready to settle down with a husband to take care of and kids to fawn over. It’s a nice thing he is attracted to Jason who has a sort of ready-made family to go. Right?

So Ben and Jason meet, there is an attraction on both parts and while Ben is ready for some action while Jason is available on vacation, Jason is still processing the feelings he gets as he is with Ben and checking Ben out. I loved sexual awakening/journey or even coming of age that we get with Jason. He and Amy got pregnant by mistake when they were both so young, just babies as teenagers that he never had the chance to explore what he likes, and who he was actually attracted to sexually. Jason’s thoughts on men and men in magazines was always more towards admiration of their physique and not an attraction to them in a sexual way. Ben naturally awakens these new feelings, this attraction and acknowledgment in Jason and it’s incredibly beautiful. I am sure that didn’t make much sense because the way Keira Andrews wrote it was gorgeous but I had to mention it.

Anyway. The men meet, they begin to spend more time together doing all sorts of hiking and sight-seeing whenever Ben could meet them and the rafting trip opens up Jason in a new way. But, his new insight about who is attracted to, namely men but more directly Ben, he starts to question if he is allowed to want it. Again, Jason’s decisions as a parent are not unique. Jason's parental guilt is something I think most parents have to deal with especially if you're a single parent you feel it a little bit more just because you're the only one your child has. Jason who decided to keep Maggie at such a young age has even more guilt and a chip on his shoulder, of being the perfect parent and as a parent, it's hard to face the fact that you took two heartbeats out of your life to give something to yourself and something awful happens. As a parent, yes sometimes we become so centered on our child that we forget that to be a good parent that self-care and self-love has to happen or else we can't be the parent our child truly needs. If Jason doesn't take care of his needs of letting himself feel emotions and be physical with somebody, with Ben, and allow himself to feel and love he's going to be full of anxiety and full of the worry… and we saw it happen.

Sorry. Rambling Red is on a roll.

The chemistry between Jason and Ben is palpable and when Ben says he is open to new possibilities, I was giddy. I adored that this book really focused on Ben, Jason and Maggie being together. In a way, it lets you know that they are what are important no matter what, that this trio, this chance meeting of three people is the focus, as it should be. Not saying there aren’t great side characters who you first loathe and then end up liking, but the focus was on the romance of this meant to be family.

Now, there is action that had my heart skipping beats and times where I so wanted Ben and Jason to stay put and not move but keep going because Maggie was all that mattered. Yes, something happens to Maggie and extreme situations can make or break people and this began to bring Jason and Ben together. Their first kiss was heartbreaking to me and their first time was nothing short of hot and a bit kinky but I loved that Jason put himself in Ben’s hands with complete trust.

But, that guilt is a tough one for Jason to kick and when his past shows up, he does what he knows and runs from Ben. The separation was painful and I ached for Ben and Jason to open up to one another. I can say that the reunion was amazing. Maggie’s reaction to her dad and Ben was so grown up but if fit her character and I really like that we got a few POV’s from her in the story as well.

I was told a few times that the epilogue would be something I would love and OMG was it ever. It was so damn beautiful that I openly wept tears of joy at my desk as I read it. That is how you write an epilogue folks. Goodness.

Road to the Sun was a stunningly tale of finding love when you thought your chance would never come. It’s a story of trust, of finding yourself and following your heart, even when it seems impossible. It’s a story that gave me hope, made me fall in love so much that my cup runneth over.

Keira Andrews has delivered another stellar read that I cannot recommend enough. Trust me, you need this book in your life.

Review: The Castaway Prince by Isabelle Adler

Ostracized by his family for his sexual identity, Prince Stephan is forced to flee his homeland before his older brother ascends the throne.

Stephan has been drawn to feminine things for as long as he can remember, so when the dire need for secrecy arises, he seizes the chance to don the perfect disguise. With the help of his loyal servant, Stephan picks his way through hostile territory, hiding his identity by posing as a woman. His only hope for asylum lies with the man who had been his friend and lover three years ago. But when that man also happens to be the crown prince of a rival country, things are a bit more complicated.

With war looming on the horizon, the danger of discovery grows by the moment. With all odds stacked against him, will Stephan find a safe place where he can be his true self, or is he doomed to remain a castaway?

I can't even believe I'm about to say this with the current state of my TBR but I wish this were longer. This was a little amuse-bouche that left me wanting more.

"The Castaway Prince" is a fantasy story involving Stephan, prince of Seveihar and his manservant, Warren. Stephan has fled his homeland with Warren and they are seeking asylum in Esnia. He had a brief affair with Prince Arlen of Esnia a few years ago and is hoping that will work to his advantage and curry favor with him. However their tryst precipitated a rift between the kingdoms that is reaching a boiling point and Stephan's brother is a bit of a warmonger.

For such a short story there's a decent amount of worldbuilding and I thoroughly enjoyed Adler's writing style. Very quickly she established a very distinct atmosphere with her language usage that left me wanting more. Stephan's character was also relatively well developed with a smattering of backstory.

Stephan is androgynous, likes to dress as a female and can easily pass as such.

It doesn't seem like his family abused him but rather ignored him which is a hell all its own. He does at one point contemplate suicide so if you're easily triggered, you may want to exercise caution when reading this.

My affinity for androgyny and crossdressing is what drew me to this story in the first place and I really liked Warren's acceptance of Stephan without censure. They have good banter even with the class difference, but I wish their camaraderie had more time to grow and stretch its wings, more together on page time would've gone a long way in convincing me of their HEA. As it stands, the ending felt rushed and unnatural, but it was sweet and I liked that quite a lot.

It goes without saying that I'd read a follow up to this story but I'd also read something else by this author, though I'd probably aim for something longer.

Recommend to fantasy fans who are looking for a quick and sweet diversion.

He always has a plan…

Jesse Preston is exactly where he always wanted to be: in LA, recording an album. So why does he feel like he’s about to lose everything? One thing he’s sure of is that he needs to keep his bisexuality hidden… but he never planned on falling for someone. Not just anyone—a TV star who’s one half of a famous, and straight, celebrity couple.

One kiss can change everything…

Grayson Adler is used to pretending. He’s an actor after all. So when he’s asked to keep his break-up with his troubled co-star a secret he has no problem playing along. He also has no problem showing Jesse around LA. Grayson likes spending time with him, likes making him laugh, likes him more than he’d ever expected. But they’re just friends, right?

In a town where everybody’s got secrets, how can they be sure of what’s real?

This novel can be read as a standalone. It’s complete at 60,000 words, with no cliffhanger and no cheating. It does feature ping-pong, hats, dance breaks, and explicit scenes between adult men.

Excerpt

Grayson came to stand close and Jesse had to take a sudden intake of air as the force of Grayson's gaze locked on. His eyes—brown, or this close, revealed to be hazel and shot through with green-gold streaks—were on Jesse's and nothing could make him look away.

"I shouldn't have left things like that. I shouldn't have left."

"It's okay," Jesse started to say, but Grayson kept going.

"No. You need to know something. I don't have a girlfriend. I mean, I did, but Annabel and I broke up months ago. I'm supposed to keep it quiet so she doesn't have to deal with the press, and so the studio can keep promoting us as a couple on and off the show. Annabel's fragile right now so I don't mind it being a secret… except I don't like lying to you. I really don't like it. And I think I've been doing it a lot because you weren't wrong before. I was hitting on you, I just didn't realize it. This is stupid because twenty-four is too old to be having a sudden sexual awakening—except thinking back, maybe I've always been looking at guys along with girls? I just thought it was a professional interest in studying their bodies. And I did play the love interest of a boy on a family cable drama when I was sixteen. I really liked our kissing scenes, but I was going through a Method phase at the time, so I thought it was about inhabiting the character. My role was only a three-episode arc though, and I had a girlfriend, so I never really got to explore what it might mean—"

Jesse realized that Grayson showed no signs of slowing down or even taking a breath, so he did the most obvious thing and kissed him.

Guest Review: Turn Up the Heat by Jane Davitt & Alexa Snow

First impressions fool recently dumped Rory into thinking Shannon's a walk on the wild side and the perfect way to get over a failed relationship. Shannon's not about to argue. Not when Rory coaxes him into some of the hottest, roughest sex of his life. But who is Rory falling in love with? A fantasy lover or the real man?

Fighting to keep Rory happy, longing for romance as well as the steamy sessions that leave them bruised and breathless, Shannon's got a lot on his plate even before family and friends complicate matters further.

There's only one solution. Turn up the heat, and hope it doesn't burn their relationship to the ground.

Reviewer: Lost in a Book

Holy kinkfest Batman!! This book was like Wheel of Fortune, kink style. Every spin will land you a prize kink with a…happy ending. *wink wink* Unless you’re into delayed gratification, then this is one for you too. We had spanking, pain, dirty talk, delayed gratification, dirty talk, humiliation, role playing, dirty talk, restraint, thrill of being caught, and being used to name a few of the prizes that were available to Rory and Shannon.

The sex was hot, how could it not be with that much kink to choose from? There wasn’t even a hint of vanilla. Unless you count that one time they cuddled and went to sleep? *shrug* There was a moment when a rubber glove came out that I thought my hard limit was about to approach… False alarm, not an ounce of crisco in sight; they just needed to do a cavity search. The dirty talk. Ohhhh the dirty talk… Shannon was on his A game with them words he speaks.

hot copy.gif

Shannon meets Rory when he responds to an ad to buy a motorcycle. When Shannon comes back a few days later to test drive it… he ends up test driving more than the motorcycle.

“Promises, promises. I don’t want words, I want action. You drive that bike like you know what you’re doing, but how do you fuck?”

This was supposed to be a one and done type situation. However, Shannon and Rory couldn’t stop thinking about the mind-blowing sex they had and decided a repeat was needed. There wasn’t much outside of sex for most of the book. We know that Rory is a dietitian and Shannon works construction and sometimes a bouncer on weekends. The bulk of the story is built around their sex-life and Rory’s brother, Jude.

Jude has been in a lot of trouble throughout his life and apparently Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is 100% to blame for why Jude can’t make the right choices and function as an adult. Rory is always the one to bail Jude out; literally. This dynamic between the brothers ruined Rory’s relationships with his previous boyfriends and puts a strain on the relationship with his friends and parents. They all feel that he is enabling Jude’s behavior. This strain continues until Shannon comes along and approaches Jude differently than the others by holding him accountable and setting limits. Shannon’s approach to Jude brings him closer to Rory.

A big issue for the MCs in this book was their sexual compatibility. Rory has a strong desire for kink but neither Rory or Shannon have indulged in anything other than vanilla before.

“Who knew desire this overwhelming existed? Separate from love or any real knowledge of the man about to fuck him, his need for rough handling took him over, free from captivity at last, given full rein for the first time.”

This “full rein” puts a chasm in their relationship. Rory is constantly looking for things to turn up the heat and Shannon indulges but then kicks himself for going along with it. Shannon is insecure throughout on his purpose in their relationship

“Being used for sex sounded great in theory. In practice, it was doing a number on his self-esteem.”
“I get him off, fulfill every jerk-off fantasy he dreams up. Is that making him happy? For now, sure, but long-term?”

A huge issue with both men is their lack of communication skills. Neither are able to do what is necessary to further their relationship. There isn’t a discussion on limits or lines and Rory steps right over it.

“Tell me, Doc, if you knew I was as vanilla as the image you project, if my dick was five inches not nine, would you still be interested in me? Because I don’t know who you think you’re dating, but it isn’t the man I see in the mirror. It isn’t me. And you were too busy getting your rocks off to notice I was uncomfortable.”
“I knew it wouldn’t last, but I wanted as much of you as I could get. Should’ve known it was a mistake. Can’t build on sand and expect it to hold up when the tide comes in.”

The remainder of the book brings us on a journey of discovery and limits for Rory and Shannon. They both have to figure out what they want in a relationship and the kink limits they are comfortable with.

This book was alright. The kink and last 25% moved it to 3 stars. The emotional connection was lacking for 75% of the book. I didn’t understand the point of their relationship outside of sex for most of it. It was almost as if they could walk away, no biggie. The remaining 25% really put a spotlight on the missing pieces. I finally got their relationship at the end and I wish that it was more developed throughout. There were some WTF moments that left me shaking my head. You’ll know when you get there. Especially around 74%. These WTF moments were meant to serve as a catalyst to further their relationship but instead really showed the lack of emotional connection.

Speaking of WTF…Let’s talk about the cover? Seriously? I'm a huge fan of beards and facial hair but this bearded guy makes me think he should be driving a creepy white van with candy in his pocket. I know, I know… Don’t judge a book blah blah blah. I judge and that cover doesn’t make me think Turn up the Heat.

Also speaking of WTF, this book had 2 big jumps in time without indication. These jumps left a lot of questions as to how they ended up where they did. One moment it was a hook up and the next they are having dinner with the friends. *confused* The secondary characters were funny and it seems that the next book has been set up nicely with Dex and Elliott.

I didn’t hate this. It was alright and had some enjoyable moments. If the relationship development improves (maybe expand instead of having a time lapse), this could be a decent read and then I would recommend it. If you like dirty talk, I’d recommend it even if their relationship development stays the same. *hawwwwwt*

The Sun Keeps Rising

“Shit!”

Micky cursed loudly and squinted through the morning glare to read the alarm clock that was obviously having trouble performing its one and only basic function. He threw off his duvet and jumped out of bed, his foot landing on a plastic wind-up toy penguin discarded on the floor. The penguin openly mocked him by tossing itself into a noisy backflip.

“Fuck!”

Micky cursed again, bending down to pick up the toy and throw it savagely against the wall. It shattered into a million pieces and Micky felt instantly guilty.

“Flynn!” he yelled, hopping over to his bedroom door and yanking it open. Treading more carefully to the bathroom opposite, he rubbed his eyes before coming face-to-face with himself in the mirror above the sink.

He looked like shit. No change there. The three hours of almost sleep he’d gotten obviously hadn’t done anything to improve on his disheveled appearance. He ran a hand over the stubble on his chin. He needed to shave but now didn’t have the time. Micky turned on the tap, dunked his head under the cold stream and squeezed paste onto his toothbrush.

“Flynn!” he shouted again, louder this time, before shoving the toothbrush into his gob and brushing vigorously. The minty taste did nothing for his dry mouth.

“Yes, Micky,” came a quiet little voice from the bathroom doorway.

Still holding the toothbrush between his lips, foam dripping out from the side of his mouth, Micky turned.

“We’re late,” he said, trying to suck the minty drool back up and stop it escaping from the corners.

“I’m dressed,” Flynn replied with a huge proud smile.

Flynn stood in the doorway, clutching another wind-up plastic toy. He kept spinning the thing around, setting off an ear-piercing buzz as it unwound at double speed. He appeared so small and fragile. More like a five-year-old than his actual eight years. He’d gotten dressed. Sort of. He’d managed to pull on his gray school trousers over his pajama bottoms and his army-green jumper clung inside out. No socks, and his mousy-brown curls stuck out from his head in all directions.

Micky’s heart melted a little at the sight.

“Well done, Flynn.” Micky finished brushing his teeth, spat down the plughole and cupped a handful of water into his mouth to rinse. Turning back to his brother, Micky then crouched in front of him. “But how about we try taking the pajamas off?”

Flynn looked down, waggling his toes, and back up at his big brother. “Why?” he asked, confused. “I put them back on later.”

Micky laughed. The kid had a point.

“Come on.” Micky took hold of Flynn’s hand to walk him back into the small box room. It had twin beds, pushed up against opposite sides. One had used to belong to Micky before he’d moved into the master bedroom.

“What time did you get up today?” Micky asked, dragging Flynn’s jumper over his head.

“Five five two,” Flynn replied.

He wound up the blasted plastic toy again and Micky breathed in deeply, preventing his immediate instinctive reaction to take the thing and smash it against the wall in comradeship with its penguin mate.

“That’s early,” Micky said, pulling off Flynn’s pajama top then rooting around in the drawer for his brother’s school polo shirt. He found it scrunched at the bottom and helped Flynn squirm into it while trying to smooth out the creases.

“For what?” Flynn asked, holding on to Micky’s shoulder as he knelt and stepped out of his trousers.

“Everything,” Micky replied with a yawn.

“Daddy didn’t say it was.”

Micky looked into Flynn’s blue eyes. The white starburst pattern within them gave him the feeling of being hypnotized. Micky blinked.

“Dad’s not here, Flynn,” Micky said slowly, standing to inspect his now school-uniform-clad little brother.

“Yes, he is.” Flynn smiled widely, his plastic toy buzzing in his hands.

Micky stared down at for a brief moment, then spun around and ran full pelt down the stairs and into the living room. The place was dark and dank, stinking of booze and fags with beer cans littering the floor.

Micky yanked open the curtains to witness the disgusting figure sprawled on the sofa. Tatty stonewashed denim jeans bagged around his knees and the T-shirt he wore, once white in color, was stained yellow with patches of Micky didn’t want to know what. His greasy, graying hair hung around his face like rats’ tails. He was snoring and every breath out from his wide-open mouth filled the room with a putrid stench.

Micky kicked at the arm dangling off the sofa. The man grumbled but didn’t move. Micky kicked him again, more fiercely. Opening one eye, the brute belched as he squinted through the glaring sunlight.

“Get the fuck out,” Micky demanded.

The laughter that followed made Micky’s skin crawl, along with the irritating scratching of fingernails across the man’s chest. The shirt rubbed against the curly dark hairs scattering his fat body and made the unbearable scraping of nails down a chalk board.

“Now,” Micky growled.

The grunted response wasn’t something Micky could decipher, nor did he care to. Micky watched with contempt as he rolled off the sofa and landed on the floor with a thump. Several beer cans crunched under his heavy frame and he rolled again to push up on to all fours. Grunting once more, he heaved himself to stand. He tripped on his own feet and clutched at the wall. Micky clenched his fists at the ready as the second loud belch blasted out and Micky had to turn away from the oncoming stink.

“Money,” he demanded, holding out a hand.

“Get fucked,” Micky spat back.

“Then I take his.”

He staggered over to the fireplace mantelpiece and made a grab for the handmade clay moneybox shaped like a car. Micky wrapped firm fingers around his wrist and squeezed tightly.

“Over my dead body.” Micky gritted his teeth. Clutching the wrist harder, he used his other hand to root around in the dirty jeans pocket and yanked out a key. Shaking his head, Micky shoved him away. “Now leave, before I fucking kill you.”

“Micky?” Flynn’s delicate little voice squeaked from the living room door. He clung to the plastic toy still in his hand, his eyes tightly shut.

Micky ran over, picked him up and settled him on his hip. For an eight-year-old, Flynn weighed no more than a couple of stone, his body skin and bones. It wasn’t his fault. It was the condition. Flynn rested his head on Micky’s shoulder, wrapping his arms around his big brother’s neck, still clamping his eyes shut.

“It’s okay, Flynn. Dad’s leaving now.”

Group Review: An Unnatural Vice (Sins of the Cities #2) by K.J. Charles

In the sordid streets of Victorian London, unwanted desire flares between two bitter enemies brought together by a deadly secret.

Crusading journalist Nathaniel Roy is determined to expose spiritualists who exploit the grief of bereaved and vulnerable people. First on his list is the so-called Seer of London, Justin Lazarus. Nathaniel expects him to be a cheap, heartless fraud. He doesn’t expect to meet a man with a sinful smile and the eyes of a fallen angel—or that a shameless swindler will spark his desires for the first time in years.

Justin feels no remorse for the lies he spins during his séances. His gullible clients simply bore him. Hostile, disbelieving, utterly irresistible Nathaniel is a fascinating challenge. And as their battle of wills and wits heats up, Justin finds he can’t stop thinking about the man who’s determined to ruin him.

But Justin and Nathaniel are linked by more than their fast-growing obsession with one another. They are both caught up in an aristocratic family’s secrets, and Justin holds information that could be lethal. As killers, fanatics, and fog close in, Nathaniel is the only man Justin can trust—and, perhaps, the only man he could love.

Chelsea - 4 Hearts

Well Nathaniel and Justin couldn't have been more different from Clem and Rowley and as such we got an entirely different type of story! Where Clem and Rowley were all sweet explorations and careful considerations, Nat and Justin were all hateful fucks and shoving their opinions in each other's faces.

When we get down to brass tacks, Justin is a liar who literally doesn't give a shit about anyone or anything other than himself and the two girls who live with him. Nathaniel has a very strong moral compass and generally believes he's right about most things. These two clash!...to say the least and you can feel it on page. Their fight, anger and passion towards each other is so obvious it's hard to see how they'll come together… and when they do... Wow.

ng at it's finest!

It surprisingly doesn't take too long for Justin to need Nat's help and for Nat to give it freely, which was the last thing Justin expected. They start to get to know each other and it is lovely to see. I think I would've liked more of this scattered throughout the book though. By the time we get to the 'getting deep’ stages of their 'relationship’ it's all in one clump and became a little slow…. If it was more evenly spread this would've been a 5 heart read!

The mystery that started in Book 1 continues and develops more. I felt there was definitely more mystery and less relationship in this book compared to the last one, which was also a little downer for me.

This was a great addition to the overall trilogy though and I'm super excited about this new heir and can't wait for book 3!!!!

Adam - 4 Hearts

Nathanial Roy and Justin Lazarus are two completely different men. From the moment they meet, they’re at each other’s throats. The mutual dislike is intense. But underneath that, there’s also a strong current of desire.

Most of Nathaniel and Justin’s issues boil down to the fact that they see the world differently. Nathaniel wants justice and order. Justin sees life as a jungle - you either eat, or get eaten.

Justin seems cold and aloof at first, but I was immediately drawn to him. Through his POV, readers see that the shell around him is only for protection, and he had very little control over how his life turned out.

Their first few meetings are disasters. I thought they were hilarious. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t want to see two potential lovebirds shoot daggers at one another, but these two so obviously wanted each other, that it was just funny.

And of course, once Justin and Nathaniel finally gave in to what was building between them, they were hawt. Angry sex FTW!

Things are made more difficult when the two MCs are embroiled in the scandal involving bigamy and murder from book 1. Though Nathaniel and Justin are accidental players in the game, I was more entertained by the mystery this time around than I was in book 1.

The twists and turns kept me hooked, and the action scenes kept me on the edge of my seat.

The situation that the MCs find themselves in also forces them to figure out what they really want from each other.

The big stumbling block in the relationship is Justin’s career as a fraudulent spiritualist. Though I understood why Nathaniel had issues with it, I thought he was being deliberately stubborn by refusing to see things from Justin’s point of view.

But my annoyance with Nathaniel was short-lived. Once the two finally decided to be honest and open with each other, and actually talk, it didn’t take long for them to find a way forward.

Overall, I really liked ‘An Unnatural Vice.’ The main characters are complex and interesting, the mystery was engaging, and the romance was angsty but with an excellent happy ending. I’m looking forward to book 3!

SheReadsALot - 4.25 Hearts

Once again, KJ Charles blew my expectations to smithereens after reading An Unnatural Vice.

Once again, she delivered word porn to savor. And wrote a mystery arc that I was fully engaged with and can't wait to be solved.

Once again a set well written characters that I just wanted to pick apart and re-read over and over.

The leads in the second in Sins of the Cities series, are the serious, crusading former lawyer, now journalist Nathaniel Roy and the deviously cunning spiritualist Justin Lazarus. I don't there isn't a theme this author couldn't conquer. Vice is enemies to lovers and is always my weakness which the author writes it sooooo well.

Nathaniel is writing an expose on the frauds that are spiritualists. The alleged psychics that can communicate with the dead and tell the grieving their loved ones' wishes from beyond the veil... for a price. Nathaniel visits a popular to see the schemer in action. Enter one of my favorite KJ Charles characters, the "Seer of London" aka Mr. Justin Lazarus.

From their first meeting the adversaries are attracted to each other, even if they think that other person is in the wrong. Archbishop's son Nathaniel might be atheist, but he will always fight for what's right. And Justin grew up in the gutter, so whatever he can do so he doesn't have to scrape and bow to anyone. And if that includes fleecing the idiots with fat pockets, so be it.

While the two men argue and try to outwit one another, the arc from the last book is churning along. It might seem slow in spots, but I think it might've been the parts where introspection was given from either man's POV. The men can't deny their lust and act on it rather quickly. And it never fizzles out. They just kept getting better and hotter. Hints: big guy bottoming and hate sex! Wherever the two had sex, floor, backroom or bannister...it scorched.

While Nathaniel is steadfast in getting the rightful heir in place, he can't help but see the good in Justin. Obviously so as Lazarus is the first man in over five years that Nathaniel ever looked at in passion. The author didn't make Nathaniel's past lover, Tony feel like a silent partner that kept a noose of grief around the neck. But the pain of missing his lover definitely came across.

Justin is amoral and doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks. It was love at first read once I got to delve into that criminal mind. Lying, deceitful, always thinking twenty steps ahead, tricky as hell. That's Justin and more. He's so multifaceted. And underneath the cunning exterior with the eyes that never missed anything, is a damaged man who just needed someone to understand him.

"I hate what you do, and I kneel at your altar anyway."
"Then you're a fool. I lie and cheat and I'm so jealous of a dead man I could die myself-"

The mystery is coming to a head. A lot of truths were finally uncovered, there is still the suspect from book #1 running around. What is the motive. After finishing, it doesn't seem to be over. I can't believe the hints to the next lead was there in book #1. And I can't wait for #3 to be out - the protagonists (Mark which already knew and his love interest will be very, very interesting.) Their history seems like it might possibly explosive.

As for An Unnatural Vice, I enjoyed this even more than book #1 just for the pleasure of reading Justin.

Highly recommended especially for readers who love devious characters!

Group Review: On Point (Out of Uniform #3) by Annabeth Albert

Never fall for your best friend…

Pushing thirty, with his reenlistment looming, decorated navy sniper Maddox Horvat is taking a long look at what he really wants in life. And what he wants is Ben Tovey. It isn’t smart, falling for his best friend and fellow SEAL, but ten years with Ben has forged a bond so intimate Maddox can’t ignore it. He needs Ben by his side forever—heart and soul.

Ben admits he likes what he’s seen—his friend’s full lower lip and the perfect muscles of his ass have proved distracting more than once. But Ben's still reeling from a relationship gone to hell, and he's not about to screw up his friendship with Maddox, too.

Until their next mission throws Ben and Maddox closer together than ever before, with only each other to depend on.

Now, in the lonely, desperate hours awaiting rescue, the real challenge—confronting themselves, their future and their desires—begins. Man to man, friend to friend, lover to lover.

Averaged!

Adam - 4 Hearts

The blurb had me hooked - friends to lovers, military men, and a good amount of angst.

‘On Point’ starts off with Maddox and Ben, two SEALs and best friends, on a mission in Indonesia. When things go FUBAR, the two rely on each other in order to make it out alive.

Over the course of their rescue and recovery, things that Ben and Maddox had been ignoring for years come out in the open: the two can’t imagine life without each other, and just being friends isn’t enough.

Maddox was immediately likeable. He’s calm and level-headed. Through his POV and flashbacks, readers get a front-row seat to how Maddox tried to suppress his feelings for Ben over the years, and how seeing Ben with other men hurt him.

It was easy to connect to Maddox. He just wanted someone to love, and for someone to love him back.

description

It took me more time to warm up to Ben. He spends much of the book being deliberately oblivious, refusing to acknowledge what Maddox meant to him.

I could understand that Ben’s failed marriage made him skittish, but it takes quite a while for him to get his head out of the sand.

The romance is slow and steady. Between their injuries and Ben’s refusal to acknowledge the truth, Maddox and Ben spend a lot of time circling around each other.

But I liked the slow build-up. The flashbacks and introspections paint of picture of Maddox and Ben that made it easy to root for them. The two so obviously belonged together.

Once they give in to the attraction between them, it was hot. Their injuries may have made some things difficult, but Ben and Maddox have no trouble finding fun ways to get off.

description

Also, it was incredibly sweet how Ben tried to so hard to be the perfect boyfriend.

The main roadblock to their happiness is miscommunication. Both of these men find it difficult to share. It takes a while for the two to be honest and open with each other.

Maddox and Ben have to work hard for their happy ending, but once they finally do, it’s all sunshine and roses. The happy ever after was perfect.

If you’re looking for a friends-to-lovers MM read with a healthy dose of angst, I’d recommend giving ‘On Point’ a try!

SheReadsALot - 4.25 Hearts

Sometimes a book will remind me of a song of three. And this one for me while reading On Point is Smooth Criminal...

That's what Ben is.

Well to me, anyway.

The couple that seemed super obvious finally happens in the friends to lovers romance, On Point. Navy SEALs Maddox and Ben are best friends for life. They do everything together ever since the beginning of their military careers, sharing life experiences along the way. Now nearing thirty, reenlisting is on the horizon and Maddox wants out. He's tired of pining for a man he can't have, tired of watching him hooking up with randoms and just wants to bake. Sniper Maddox is one of the best marksmen in the Navy, but his aims for the one man he loves? No dice.

Ben is anti relationship after his failed quickie marriage has been crashing at Maddox's condo for two years. Coming from a divorced home, he thinks love is a myth. And the closest thing he'll have to that his his friendship with Maddox. And maybe... he might be finally admitting his attraction to the quiet gentle giant. But he's not going to do anything about it because Maddox is all about monogamy and Ben is a one night kinda of guy.

Enter a shared mission where both men get injured and their priorities on life changes. Both men sort of get their heads out of their asses and do something the obvious chemistry they have.

I enjoyed the story. Almost as much as book #2, but not quite. What I loved is getting to learn about Ben and Maddox's backgrounds. See they share similar family angst: Maddox (ultra religious, conservative homophobes) and Ben (divorce, anger toward mother leaving to join a commune). Though I'm not going to lie, Maddox's family made me rage. I know families like that, you probably know families like that. Even reading about it still burns my skin.

Maddox's friends are his true family and realizes it. So when Ben offers to try something different and be together for a trial run, I was a little happy, a little hesitant.

I came to this with a different set of expectations for Maddox and Ben. I started this series on book #2 (my fave of the series so far). Maddox was the quiet one who observed everything and secretly pined. Ben was the man whore who is using his dick as his healing prod - fuck romance, just fuck. And we get a semblance of that and not really. The characters change a little, I was expecting their personalities to be a little different but it works for the story.

The sex is hot: versatile, seductive and bed pounding fun with a friend. Those are always great qualities to have. It might've been my favorite part during the sex scenes, the two were easily able to argue and fuck and then make. They could read each other, know how they were feeling. Good stuff. No telling, a lot of showing.

Do I have any issues with On Point?

My gripe is Ben. He is frustrating, stubborn and one tracked minded. Jesus Christ, he step in just so he can't have no one else? Years of being single together... and the moment he looks like he's over pining for your ass, now he's not as slow on the uptake? There were moments when Ben treated Maddox like a possession rather than a friend. And something about it pissed me off. Because for a while, he just wasn't getting that Maddox is more than his obligatory best friend who has to do everything with him but just can't get a piece of his heart romantically.

And sweet talked to get his way.

Even with that fucking gripe, I still enjoyed this story. Who's the bigger fool, me or Maddox?

I liked the men separately and as a couple. Do I think they'll last? Yeah, if the love wasn't there, there'd be a field full of determination. The story ends with a sweet HEA, I was a little surprised but happy nonetheless.

Recommended for fans of friend to lovers, mild angst and bakers.

Cupcake - 4.5 Hearts

I don’t even have the words to express how glad I am that this worked out. I tiptoed into this house of cards like it was going to come crashing down around me at any second.

But it turned out to be my most successful Albert read! I devoured it too.

Maddox and Ben are best friends who are on the same SEAL team. I’m a fan of the friends to lovers trope and this was really good best-friends-who-don’t-want-to-lose-their-best-friend-but-damn-I’m-so-attracted-to-everything-about-you. There is also quite a bit of mission action and I enjoyed that plus all the SEAL/military speak.

Mad and Ben are on a mission that’s gone tits up for much of the first half with flashbacks of their recent past. Both are hurt pretty badly and it’s touch and go there for a minute as to whether or not Mad is going to make it. Being inside both of their head’s during this time really showed me how much they love each other and gave me a good sense of the fundamentals of both of them as characters.

Albert sprinkled in some of those details that I crave like Mad’s tendency to hum or sing when nervous and Ben’s tendency to go alpha when tensions are high. I also really enjoyed the SEAL team dynamics.

Once they both recover they have to figure out what to do about the shitstorm of awkward that’s been between them since the Canaan Experiment 2.0 that left a whole lot of WTFery in its wake.

You legit could’ve knocked me over with a feather when Ben was all, ‘let’s date! For science’.

I fumbled my kindle!!!!!! No joke!

Not to be rude or anything but my previous reads by this author’s tend to drag out the push/pull thing until like 85-90% until someone cracks and lays their card on the table, so I was ready for more of the same but this cropped up BEFORE the 50% mark!

Their communication is still pitiful and Mad’s utter and complete lack of faith in Ben and their relationship despite all evidence to the contrary was annoying, but at least they’re both honest about their attraction to the other!

The sex was fair. I did like the begging and dirty talk, but I think the connection between them and the romanceyness is what I liked more than anything else. Two big bad ass SEALS being all gaga over each other gave me a serious case of the heart eyes.

…removed him from his anger and hurt, left only this part of him that was always going to require Maddox more than oxygen.

I like both of these guys, but maybe Mad a teensy bit more. Course it didn’t hurt that he likes to cook and bakes regularly, that his life goal is to have a little bakery and he thinks up recipes when he’s bored or stressed. And anyone who signs up for and attends a cupcake seminar is my kind of people! But I really get Ben, why he is the way he is and what motivates him. In my opinion, these were the best characterizations I’ve read from this author as far as depth and dimension are concerned to date.

You can see the conflict coming from a country mile away but I think it played out realistically and stayed true to these characters and I liked that Mad didn’t immediately let bygones be bygones.

I would certainly recommend this to anyone who enjoys best friends to lovers or military guys.

Excerpt

The rain pelted down as he made his way up the ridge, thick sheets that obscured his vision and made the terrain slippery and treacherous. Overhead, a large black bird with a colorful beak swooped in, almost sending Ben skidding into a ravine.

He whistled low, a deliberate pattern, one of the team’s signals. He repeated the sound as he approached where Maddox was supposed to be. An answering signal came from a dense thicket of green vegetation.

“It’s me. Hold your fire,” Ben called as he slipped into the mass of trees and roots. The plants here were nothing like the ones back home—giant heart-shaped leaves and bright rubbery flowers that almost looked bird- or insect-like. The trees had massive, visible roots covered with moss, and were connected by thick vines that could easily be mistaken for a deadly snake.

Below him, he could see the encampment, SEALs scurrying around. The injured hostage and Issacson, their wounded radio man, were carried out, which had to mean the chopper was close. Time to haul ass. “Maddox?”

“Here.” Maddox slid out of the shadows, rifle at the ready, just as Ben had expected. “Com’s down for you guys too?”

“Yup. Chopper’s coming in. LT sent me to bring you in. No time to waste. Issacson took a bullet, but he’s stable, and one of the hostages is in bad shape. Possible hostiles escaped, but Rogers and company are hunting them down.”

“Got it. Lead the way.” Maddox let Ben take point as they made their way down the ridge. They had to skirt the edge of a steep drop, every muddy step cautious even as they needed to make haste.

Crack.

Whoosh.

Two things happened at the same instant—gunfire broke out above them and a chopper approached, engine noise making it hard to track the source of the shots. But Maddox was already on it, crouching low, rifle ready. Another shot whistled over their heads and Maddox returned fire. They both left the trail and headed into the brush, intent on finding the hostiles.

The chopper circled low, then went back up. Fuck. The chopper was struggling to land in the encampment clearing, which meant the next pass was critical. Still staying low and gun ready, he inched forward. No more gunfire had followed Maddox’s, but that didn’t mean he could let his guard down for a second.

The chopper circled again, but the terrain had shifted and Ben could no longer see the encampment beneath them.

“Fuck.” Maddox never cursed, so Ben whipped his head around just in time to see Maddox slipping off the poor excuse for a trail.

Ben scrambled on his stomach, stretching out an arm, trying to catch Maddox. “Grab on.”

“No. Don’t—” Maddox didn’t get the sentence out before they were both tumbling down the muddy incline, heading straight for the ravine that lay between them and the encampment. Ben tried to slow their descent but his attempt to grab at some vines only resulted in the foliage following them down.

Maddox screamed, a legitimate yell that chilled Ben to his boots because Maddox never lost composure. Ever. Ben had once watched Wizard put sutures in Maddox’s scalp while Maddox hummed, never dropping his tune.

Ben grabbed for him again and— Pop. Ben’s arm pulled at an unnatural angle, caught up in a tree root and not Maddox’s strong grip as he’d intended. He wrenched loose but the damage was already done, and still he slid, mud carrying him faster, rocks and vegetation raining down after them.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.” Ben’s arm and shoulder were on fire and he was still moving, sliding, nothing working—

Boom. The bottom of the ravine arrived without warning, a muddy bog that sucked him down, but it was hardly a soft landing, rocks and plants poking at him. His arm had him cursing, eyes watering. He’d seen Rogers dislocate a shoulder last year in the grinder obstacle course, and at the time he’d rolled his eyes at how Rogers had carried on. He had a sick feeling that he’d done the same or worse to his shoulder, and he got the urge to cry and howl.

“Oh fuck.” His stomach heaved and he barely made it to his side before he threw up from the pain. He turned his head and almost lost his guts again. Maddox lay a few feet from him, leg at an unnatural angle, blood dripping from his head, helmet nowhere to be seen. Not talking or cursing.

Clawing at the rocks with his good arm, Ben pulled himself closer, looking for the telltale rise and fall of Maddox’s chest—and not seeing it.

“You are not fucking with me,” Ben growled. “Mad? Come on, man.”

Still nothing, not even a ghost of movement across Maddox’s pale lips. Terror, nothing Ben had ever known before, froze his veins, made him lightheaded from more than just the fall. He refused, utterly refused to live in a world where Maddox wasn’t okay.

“Maddox. Horvat.” He shook his shoulder, cursing under his breath. No, no, no.

Whoosh. A chopper—the chopper—flew overhead, much too far to spot them down this ravine, and heading away from them.

Sputter. Maddox let out a mighty cough. It might have been the most beautiful sound Ben had ever heard, because it meant Maddox was here, that he was fighting, and Ben started to laugh with relief until Maddox spoke. “Heck. They’re leaving us.”
