Review: Black Snow by EAB

Prince Brier Snow has lived in the shadow of King Snow’s exalted memory. However, his fate changes when he nears his majority and Lirend’s steward queen attempts to dethrone him by exploiting an obscure requirement in the late king’s will: a yearlong sabbatical.

Brier travels to the desolate land of Aire to train under the Ceve guild, scorned refugees of war, including their guarded leader, Roland. Brier’s skillful master unlocks hidden potential, and what begins as a dutiful bond turns into ill-fated affection. When Brier returns to the capital, he’s carrying proof of his indiscretions with Roland—and his condition grows more apparent with each passing day. An affair with the huntsman is a scandal Brier’s enemies can use against him, but the birth of an heir is a burden even Brier is not sure he can bear.

Roland Archer, a man with a murky past, is skeptical of the contract to train the prince but willing to do anything for the guild’s freedom. Despite his best intentions, he is smitten by Lirend’s future king. Roland has resigned himself to solitude, but fate has other plans—for him, for Brier, and for Lirend’s oppressed subjects. Can Roland help Brier face a power-hungry queen and a country torn asunder? Either they will bring equality to a land that desperately needs it, or they’ll be thwarted by cunning enemies and an illusory curse.

Wow and wow again. This book was something else and that is a high compliment with lack of better words. I am going to try and review this with some sort of meaning but there was a lot going on in this story. Beware, this shall be Rambling Review by Red.

First, this is a long book but now that I look back at my notes, it almost reads as three books in one. You have the beginning which is about Brier being sent on his sabbatical and all he learns in life and love with Roland. You have Brier’s return to Avenough and the whole Mpreg deal that I LOVED from the realization the King is knocked up to the birth *smirks* and what Brier’s body allows him to do. And then you have the reveal, the lies brought forth and all the deceit that comes with it to the end. BUT… there is an epilogue and at first I wasn’t buying it and full on side eyed it but what I was given at the end… OH HELL YEAH. *grabby hands* Gimme the next book.

I have to gush about the cover for a bit because it’s gorgeous. Honestly, it’s what drew me to the book but when you realize how well it fits, when you actually get those moments of intimacy with Roland and Brier, the cover is so damn swoony. I just can’t take it.
“But how did she come to love the prince who had only loved her for her beauty when the huntsman had loved her for her heart?”
“How indeed.”
“And the poor huntsman, who had died, rather than to disgrace himself with the blood of his beloved. ’Tis a sad story indeed, Marietta.” Brier pouted. “Although you said it was a happy end.”
“Well….” Marietta sighed, bemused. “I did not think of it in that way, little prince.”
“I think that I should marry a huntsman over a prince,” Brier decided as he flopped his head into the mountain of pillows, smiling softly.
“And why not a princess?” the nurse questioned, crossing her arms.
“That is because I should like to be kissed by a huntsman,” Brier answered matter-of-factly
So, from the prologue we know this is a tale based upon the Snow White fairy tale with a twist. I adored how we got a young prince Brier being told the story and how at the end, he declares he wants to be kissed by a huntsman rather than a prince. I mean, why wouldn’t he when the huntsman wouldn’t kill Snow White because he fell in love with her heart and the prince fell in love with her beauty. It was adorable to see Brier’s reaction and it gave foreshadowing to the story, even if you didn’t know the tale of Snow White.

So Prince Brier who has not yet reached his majority to take the throne as king, is sent by his evil queen and step mother on a sabbatical to learn how to hunt, fight and all that stuff you need to learn to be a man. *grins* He is sent with Roland Archer, a huntsman whom he will live with for the year. Brier is intrigued and quite quickly has a crush on his new, “Master” but Roland is so stand offish. *sigh* There is a total teacher/student as well as a May/December and maybe a bit of Dom/Sub going on with these two and let me tell you it’s beautiful. I loved every single slow burn moment of the sabbatical and it broke my heart.

I won’t go into too much detail because I think it is total plot spoiler but this book is gorgeous.

Prince Brier has silver leaf markings on his skin that have grown from a single leaf at birth to cover most of this body. Brier has been told they are an abomination by his step monster and he is ashamed of the marks or as he calls them scars and is careful to hide them. Yet Brier remembers being told they are more, a gift and would be known once their magic is revealed. Yeah, I know. What the hell are you talking about Sara? I am just trying to throw the fact out there that they exist and are magic and yup. There is a point and maybe you could read the story to find out, eh?
“Does this mean you’ve taken a liking to me after all, little prince?”
So anyway. Brier and Roland spend almost a year together BUT... directly after the little prince’s swoony birthday aka his majority and becoming a man, a knock at the door comes at the crappiest time. Brier is being fetched early for his coronation and taken away from Roland with a crumbled note from the queen. Ugh. What was in that note? What is Roland hiding? Oh boy, when we find out I was shocked and then fell in love with how this story blends that of Snow White with this all together new tale of Prince Snow.

Here is where part-one ends and my heart begins to break. Goodness. There was angst in this book I was not prepared for but the blurb does tell us Brier goes back and is knocked up with Roland’s baby. *rubs hand together* I was dying for the pregnancy part to begin and hoped it would take the pain of angst away for a bit.

Alone and without one another, the men struggle. Roland reveals what was asked of him after he left the queen and that he couldn't go through with it. IF you know the story of snow white, you’ll know what was asked and what decision THAT huntsman made. Sigh. This book hurt my heart after it built it up with such a slow burn romance. I hated the men apart but seeing Brier come into his own as King Snow was lovely and how he began to indeed put forth all he told Roland he would, hurt my heart. I wasn’t a fan of the separation and really just wanted to get to the part where Brier finds out he is knocked up and oh holy hell, how will Roland take that news.
His whole life he’d worried about his image and his kingdom. To ignore the whispers about his scars, and his kingship? He’d never thought of it that way.
When the couple are reunited once again and learn of Brier carrying their unborn child, they decide to be together and leave it to the wit of Marietta to decide that Roland shall be Brier's guard, giving him immediate and constant access to the man he loves and his king. But Brier still does not know of the contract Roland took and the shame he feels and I did not want him to ever find out.

I’m not a fan of lying in real life. It’s the worst thing you can do to me but in fiction, in fantasy, I get why characters do it even if I don’t like it. But this, I felt the shame and the uncertainty Roland felt of telling Brier the truth and losing his love forever. They have this connection the King and the Huntsman that wove its spell around my hopeless romantic heart and I wanted nothing more for them to be together happy and in love.

I’m going to toss this out there, I was never a fan of Prince Quintin and quite seriously side eyed him throughout the book. I thought he was always the bad guy, I felt as if he was lying 99% of the time and I don’t know why but I never felt his declarations to Brier. They felt false and maybe I was just biased because I was head over feet in love with Roland but I wanted to just shove my hand in Quintin’s face and push him back to Menlor where he belonged. I do know his reason for being there, wanting and loving Brier for his beauty just like the prince with Snow White but he bothered me. His forever company of Lord Renli who I was certain from the first meeting had to be a snake did not help his campaign with me either. Ugh.

I have to say that my first official Mpreg book was amazing. I was excited to be with Brier and Roland as they found out Brier was pregnant and how it was possible. I loved Brier going through pregnancy and loving the suffering we women go through to give birth and then the birth came. I don’t know what I was expecting but I freaking love how it was handled and how Brier’s body adapted afterward. The bit of kink tossed in with Brier’s new body is not something I had every read before but it worked for me because it worked for them and really, Roland that way was sexy.

Like I said, this is a pretty long book and felt like three in one so long book, long review.

After the birth, the couple decide to move on with their relationship even though Roland would never be accepted on the throne because Brier is Aurelian - A person of noble birth. Usually wealthy Lords and Ladies. Have immense influence in the court and Roland is Thenian or Xenothian - A derogatory name for a refugee from Thenia. Low class, with no rights. So you see, the king can’t marry a low class citizen but thankfully Brier doesn’t fucking care what anyone else thinks because he is in love and the man he loves adores him but… the man he loves still has a secret and like all good secrets, they are revealed in dramatic form.

Now we come to part three and another session of ripping my heart out. This part was painful and I read a good part of it through my fingers. The love Brier and Roland have should not be put asunder and though I know Brier’s reason for his actions, they hurt me dammit. But it was necessary to go through to get to the end and that’s all I am going say about part three…sigh.

The end was amazing and exactly what I wanted and then I turned the page and got an epilogue. As I said before it was NOT what I was expecting and when we get WHO our MC wants… I wasn’t thrilled and then a kiss happened and I was all FUCK YEAH! I am all in how long do I have to wait???

So if you can’t tell by the many, many words I have rambled through on this review, I loved this book. Brier and Roland are gorgeous. The side characters were amazing and I adored the guild and those who Brier held close to him. This was such a wonderfully rich and romantic story that I am exhausted from it now in the best possible way.

Le Sigh.

Audiobook Review: Commitment Ranch (Leaning N #1) by B.A. Tortuga

A fist fight, a snowstorm, a stolen kiss in the barn... and a second chance at love.

Ford Nixel has two law offices, two fancy condominiums, and all the right connections. In short, he has everything he wants.

The last thing he needs is his Uncle Ty’s stake in the Leaning N, a ranch that’s been in the family for generations. Ford hasn’t even been to the ranch in over a decade, not since he left his boyfriend Stoney behind and headed back to college alone.

Ford arrives at the Leaning N to find Stoney, now a single father, right where he left him. A fist fight, a snowstorm, and a stolen kiss in the barn later—Ford knows none of the heat between them has dissipated.

Listening Length: 6 hours and 20 minutes
Narrator: John Solo

John Solo does one of the sexiest baritone voices I have ever heard, and I loved that he used the huskiness for Stoney. Stoney is the sexy, silent type, wasting no words, and that combo really got me going. His character stole this book for me. I want more from him.

Ford was a nice, angsty character. A lawyer, so he over thinks everything, and a perpetual commitment-phobe, who hates Stoney for leaving him for his cousin and having a baby with her, but also had no intentions of settling down on the Ranch or in the sticks. His caustic attitude towards Stoney is very much intact, so when he is handed his uncle’s 55% stake in Leaning N Ranch, sparks fly once Ford and Stoney have to interact. This is actually a little bit of the ‘big misunderstanding’ that most people hate in gay romance. In this context, I actually didn’t mind it. It was a bit dramatic, but it carried the story.

These two characters are hot together, even while they bicker. And with John Solo making Stoney’s voice ‘fuck me’ hot, I was completely absorbed from beginning to end with every one of their interactions.

The other characters were well developed for this shorter story. I enjoyed that Stoney’s son, played an important part of this story, and Stoney’s lack of regret over his choices for his son is music to my ears.

Jeff’s character was a bit odd. I’m not sure what to make of him. I found the voice used for him a bit irritating, and I couldn’t really work out why his speech was so slow. I’m guessing the Vegan hippy (”Meat is Murder”) would speak like a stoner. His character worked well into the family environment, even if his voice didn’t work for me.

I’ve read a few BA Tortuga stories now, and I find the writing style flows well. The characters have a good depth, and they are reliable and solid. The plot arc was decent, and I enjoyed where the story went. Even the angst wasn’t over the top, and I found myself chuckling at some of it.

I am comfortable in the assertion that BA Tortuga knows how to write sex. I’ve not been disappointed with any of it to date. The emotional aspect of romance is there too, and I enjoyed the way these two characters developed over the story.

Recommended for all M/M Romance readers.

Magic and Moonlight
by
Tali Spencer

Clouds cloak his eyrie. Zyrik protects the floating city with spells clever and fearsome, woven to doom any who seek to invade the heart of his domain. Within his treasure chamber he keeps his prize, a beautiful estrel. Magic-filled. The sweetest of all feasts. So sweet that every night he returns to replenish.

So sweet he never wants to leave the darkness wherein power waits.

He lands on the high window of the highest tower. The stone knows his claws, the frost his breath. Both yield and he enters, spreads his wings again and glides in tight sweeps down the spiral labyrinth. The way glows with silver and veins of living stone, but soon the faint light calls to mind the moon, not the sun.

Zyrik’s dominion extends far beyond his celestial home, over sun-gifted things swollen with sap and blood, over fields golden with grain, and pastures thick with cattle. He reigns over cities and seas. His conquered subjects prosper and, because of this, they are content.

He, however, is cursed with a hunger he cannot quench.

His treasure waits. Moonglow hair spills over the estrel’s shoulders and down his back, brighter even than skin seemingly kissed by white pearls. From his forehead juts a horn of ivory and silver. Virgin. If he were not, the horn would be the color of blood.

“One day, you’ll rejoice to see me.” Zyrik folds his wings and stalks toward his captive.

Amber-bright eyes narrow above the faintest of smiles. “No.”

He moves behind his prey. The estrel is that, also. To possess one is… a jewel beyond kingdoms. Zyrik stands at the naked creature’s back and wraps his arms around him.

“Tell me your truename and I will free you,” he murmurs. He moves ardent lips over the sweet-tasting skin at the back of the estrel’s neck, bestowing a caress.

The estrel leans back, baring his throat. “If you speak my truename, I can never leave you.”

“One day, you will give it to me.”

Zyrik digs a single talon into the tender juncture where the estrel’s neck and shoulder meet, just deep enough, and whispers the blood spell upon the drops that well forth like red jewels. He bends to suck and pure magic fills him.

Magic-drinker. Magic-taker. The estrel’s blood gives him the voice of a god.

He wants to do more than steal sweet hot magic. He wants to join their bodies together, to plunge and soar and claim. But to keep his floating city aloft and his empire strong, Zyrik needs this. The virgin magic is too powerful, too precious.

He drinks.

Departures

We all have our happy places. Hometowns. Familiar coffee shops. Those favorite brands we know will satisfy all our quirks. As an author, my happy place is speculative fiction, wherein I gravitate toward fantasy worlds. I’m completely at home in that genre, and trust my readers share my joy in being there.

Every once in a while, though, I want to leave my usual neighborhood and explore. This is how books like The Last Cannoli (free on Goodreads) arise. There’s something quirky in a story about an intense Italian-American cannoli maker in Philly and a Wisconsin-born marketing dropout looking to reinvent his life. For one thing, I’m from Wisconsin… and I live in Philly. With an Italian-American spouse, but I digress.

Or how about “Well, Hello, Eight Eyes” in the Foolish Encounters anthology? Spider shifters, anyone? I wrote that story as a result of a Halloween challenge.

Departures are all about having fun.

After taking a few hits to my health, and not writing for a spell, I am now back up to speed and nudging books into the pipeline. The two with release dates could not be more different. One is a story in the Once Upon a Time in the Weird West anthology coming out in December. Once upon a time I might have said I couldn’t see ever writing a Western… but a friend invited me, so I wrote a Western. The story has a fantasy spin with elemental cowboys (and Comanches) but it’s very much a story with Old West roots and feel. The love story is sweet as can be.

Can I just mention my fellow authors? The Weird West has a great lineup! Kim Fielding, Ginn Hale, Lex Chase, Shira Anthony, Charlie Cochet, Andrew Q. Gordon, C.S. Poe, Astrid Amara, Jana Denardo, Jamie Fessenden, Venona Keyes, Nicole Kimberling, and Langley Hyde. And me.

In April my States of Love novella for Dreamspinner will be out. Breaking the Ice is about a gay man in the wacky culture of sturgeon-spearing and ice-fishing. It’s set in Wisconsin and I had a lot of fun with it. My main character has the “gayest ice shanty on Lake Winnebago,” drinks Fantasy Factory India Pale Ale (love that bottle!), and the story was a hoot to write.

Though not my main fare, these departure stories keep my writing fresh by stretching my skill set and imagination. What do you think? Do you like when your favorite authors do something a little different? Or do you prefer they stay the course with the work you love? Comment for a chance to win my giveaway.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit + Giveaway - Jay Bell

Surviving Gay Boot Camp

The military puts its troops through a brutal regime to break down their soldiers and build them back up again, tougher than ever. In many ways, growing up gay is a similar experience, especially for those who were raised in previous decades. While we’ve made great strides in recent years, the current political environment, especially in the United States, suggests that LGBT people are in for rough times again. But wait, there’s a beam of light past the gloomy forecast! Much like the boot camp that soldiers go through, there’s a very good chance that the next generation of LGBT youth will come out of these trying times even stronger than before. In fact, I’m reminded of the environment that I grew up in. I came out in the mid-nineties when gay people were only represented in media as comedy relief or tragic figures. The majority of public opinion was definitely not in our favor, and misinformation about what it meant to be LGBT was rampant. I faced homophobia on a regular basis and was often scared for my life, but I wouldn’t wish to grow up in a more enlightened era because I gained so much. Like what? It’s time for a list! Here are four super powers that come from surviving gay boot camp:

The ability to truly know who you are. Teenagers do a lot of navel gazing as they develop their identity. They have to ask themselves what career would suit them best and what they’d like to do with the rest of their lives, but rarely do they stand trial in their own mind, playing both judge and the accused. LGBT people are forced to dig into the very depth of their souls to discover if they are truly who they suspect they are. This means abandoning preconceived notions of a storybook life and accepting that they will always draw attention for the simplest of things. Holding hands on a first date is enough to give most teenagers sweaty palms, but imagine two guys doing so at a mall. People will stare. No matter your age or how liberal the city, you will make yourself a target for a basic expression of love. That’s scary, and a person who finally accepts that they are LGBT will soon face a challenge of courage, one that not all will pass.
The ability to stop caring what other people think of you. Being open about one’s sexuality will often draw negative attention. Chances are that at least one relative won’t approve, nor will some classmates, coworkers, politicians, or strangers. Trolls on the internet will spew their bile and it’ll be impossible to go through life without hearing some sort of slur. That’s the mildest of possible outcomes, as Matthew Shepard’s story so painfully demonstrated. Anyone who chooses to come out will have to stop caring what other people think of them, which isn’t as simple as it sounds. We all want to be liked. We want parental approval or for people in society to think highly of us. Imagine if one decision could turn half a nation against you. In the United States, that’s over one-hundred-and-fifty million people! It doesn’t matter how good or giving you are, nor how kind or fair. Being gay is a deal-breaker for many people. That’s sad, but the upside is the sheer joy and liberation of letting go. Most of us hold ourselves back to some extent because we’re worried what other people will think. Just imagine how much easier it would be to reach your full potential without all those disapproving voices in your head. The word pride is synonymous with the gay rights movement for a reason. Coming out may result in disdain from the outside, but inside it’s a blissful awakening, and the most loving gesture of self-acceptance.
The ability to care more about other people. That may seem to contradict the previous point, but there’s nothing like being a minority to make you sympathize with others in a similar plight. Conservative groups who want to infringe on the rights of others are always made up of an overwhelming majority of male Caucasians. Why? Not because white men are inherently evil, but because they grow up in a world where they are less likely to be treated as second-class citizens. They’re already at the top of the food chain, and the only thing that rattles them is the idea of having to share that throne. On some level, I can understand why, because it sucks being persecuted just because of the color of one’s skin, nation of birth, sexuality, or gender identity. I like to think that someone who has experienced starvation is more prone to share their food with someone who needs it. Sadly, this isn’t always the case, but generally it’s easier to be sympathetic toward another when you know first-hand how their suffering feels.
The ability to live for your own happiness. LGBT people who stare down their fears stand to benefit from the greatest perk of all; living the life they most desire. So many people seek the approval of others well into their adult years. This can extend to who they chose to date, where they live, what sort of work they do, their personal appearance, and more. The most common and tragic version of this involves parents and trying to please them. By the time those parents pass away, the child seeking their approval is living a life they aren’t satisfied with and might feel life’s opportunities have already passed them by. An out and proud gay person rarely stops at their sexuality. More often than not, they apply the lessons learned to the rest of their lives and do what is in their best interest; chasing after love, making dreams come true, and realizing one’s fullest potential.

So yes, while LGBT people face many challenges, those same hardships ensure they are self-assured and yet sympathetic, grounded in their own identity and yet free to become whatever they desire. For those of you standing on the precipice of a very difficult decision, keep in mind that to the brave go the spoils. If you need extra proof, I’m happy to share three stories with you that center around surviving difficulties and reaping the rewards. I’m giving away three books that feature my favorite survivors: Kamikaze Boys is the story of David Henry, who has to deal with bullying and bad parenting. Something Like Summer is the story of Benjamin Bentley, who comes out during a decade not quite ready to accept gay people. And finally, Something Like Lightning, in which Kelly Williams must deal with the loss of a dream. Each is a triumphant story of courage that very well could mirror your own, since it’s not just LGBT people who face such hardships. We could all stand to be reminded of how the most difficult path often leads to the happiest of conclusions. Three books means three winners, and hey, if you’re into autographs we can do that too! Details on how to enter are below!

Review: The Painted Crown (Unbreakable Soldiers #2) by Megan Derr

Prince Istari has spent his life reviled: his parents wish he had never been born, the royal court of Belemere avoids him for fear of angering the king, and everyone else is kept away by his notorious reputation as a deadly sharpshooter. Now a hostage of peace in Tallideth, he is subjected to their hatred as well—even that of Regent Vellem, who once considered him a comrade in arms.

Unexpected solace comes in the form of Lord Teverem, a sad, quiet lord who assumed the title when his brother was killed in the explosion for which Istari's father is to blame. He is kind and sweet and a sorely needed bright spot in Istari's life—until Istari meets his family and learns of a dangerous family secret with unexpected ties to Istari's past, a secret that could drag Tallideth and Belemere right back into war…

♦ 89,000 words

WARNING: Attempted suicide

Kept hostage at the royal court of Tallideth, Prince Istari spends his days alone. Though he’s bored, he’s used to being shunned. His first friend in Tallideth ends up being Lord Teverem, whose brother was killed by Istari’s father’s actions. But Teverem doesn’t hold that against Istari, and is willing to get to know him.

When Teverem’s family is threatened, Istari offers the protection of royal marriage. Istari had hoped to marry for love, but he’s willing to do what he can to keep Teverem and the children safe. Istari and Teverem end up finding in each other, and the children, the family they never really had. But to be happy, they’ll have to deal with those who want to destroy their new-found family.

This book takes a while to get going. I’m a fan of Megan Derr’s worldbuilding and story-weaving, so I didn’t mind, but it definitely takes patience to see how the plot will play out.

description

The romance plays second fiddle until the second half. Teverem and Istari develop a friendship and bond over the children, Teverem’s adopted nieces and nephew, but they don’t think of each other amorously until later on.

A low-key romance isn’t unusual for Megan Derr, but in this case it’s more so a result of who Istari and Teverem are. Both are demisexual, and aren’t particularly interested in sex. It’s not until they can spend time alone and really get to know each other that either of them begins thinking about the other romantically.

I enjoyed seeing how their friendship meant so much to both Istari and Teverem. The book is told from Istari’s POV, so readers experience first-hand how lonely and dejected he had been his whole life, and how being around Teverem and the children brought him so much joy.

Teverem comes across as timid at first, but it becomes clear later on that he had a core of strength. It just took Istari’s faith in him, something Teverem hadn’t gotten from anyone before, for Teverem to shine.

When Istari and Teverem eventually move on to being something more, it didn’t take any stretch of the imagination. They just built on what was already there. The two were sweet together, and clearly very happy with their small family.

description

I don’t want to give away too much of the mystery plot, but it was a fun ride. It involves political intrigue, family drama, and even some moral ambiguity. The plot was complicated, but not convoluted. There are a few twists and turns which connect to the first book and to both Istari and Teverem’s pasts, so it definitely kept me guessing and interested.

I did think that the solution was a bit too neat and easy. But it wasn’t entirely unbelievable, and I was happy with the way everything came together in the end.

Overall, ‘The Painted Crown’ was a very enjoyable read, with a slow and sweet romance, and an entertaining plot. I’d recommend this series if you’re looking for some MM fantasy with lots of political intrigue.

Page 182: Gifts for Him

“I guess we don’t have long.”

“Guess not.”

Andrew pushed Mike into the hardwood chair and yanked his shirt open, leaving his tie askew. The buttons pinged on the hardwood floor. He stripped off his own shirt and catapulted it over the dining table towards the softbox.

Mike groaned as Andrew knelt between his legs and sucked him down with spit-slicked lips. “Oh, shit. You are amazing at this.”

“Been wanting this since the first moment I saw you.” Andrew dragged the front of his briefs down and pulled out his cock.

“Christ, you’re huge.”

Andrew’s hard cock was like a club, the head impossibly thick. Mike whined with need and helplessly clenched his empty hands.

Andrew lapped at Mike’s slit as he fisted his cock. A drop of clear precum trembled on the head of Andrew’s dick, then drizzled to the floor.

Andrew scooped up a finger full of saliva from Mike’s balls and brushed across Mike’s crack. Mike shivered. Oh, fuck, how he wanted it. Wanted it to burn. Wanted to feel it for days.

“I’ve got lube in my bag. Stay after we’re done? Looks like that hole of yours needs a good hard fucking.”

“I can’t,” gasped Mike. “I fly out in an hour.”

“You don’t live here?”

Mike shook his head. “Duluth. I only come down when the agency has a job for me. I don’t know when that’ll be next.”

“I can’t wait till next time. Hold yourself open for me, baby. You want to be filled, and I know how to give you what you need.”

The door flew open. The camerawoman froze in the doorway, the extra key light in her hand.

“Oh my God, we left you alone for literally five minutes,” cried the director. “It’s lucky those shirts are permapress. Stop sucking his dick and get your clothes on. We’ve got to be out of the studio by six.”

“Although . . ..” The camerawoman looked thoughtfully at the director  “I mean, you can see the socks pretty damn well. We could just . . . go with it? Try another direction this year?”

The director gazed at Mike and Andrew assessingly as she tapped her index finger against her chin. “Do you think Middle America is ready for a department store Christmas Gift Guide with full penetration?”

Mike and Andrew looked at each other.

“Definitely,” they said in unison.

About M. Caspian

Hi, I’m Em, and I write queer horror and speculative fiction as M. Caspian, and in a few other genres under different pen names. I’m an introvert asexual Gen-X nerd from New Zealand, and yes, I have one of those weird accents. I’ve got a couple of other author blogs for marketing, but this is my main blog i.e. the place where I drabble on about shit I like, or which makes me thoughtful.

I have a PhD in feminist critical theory, which makes me pretty much unemployable. I lost my job as a university lecturer in 2012, and then my next job as a social science researcher in 2016. Follow my blog so we can share in the excitement of what job I will lose next!

There are no affiliate links on my blog. If I link to or recommend a product or book I’m not making a cent from it, promise.

The Unicorns thank M. for helping us celebrate. Be sure to tell her what you thought of her hot flash inducing fic in the comments!

Synopsis

Follow Peter into the summer following his senior year to face new beginnings, new friends, and old baggage.

After a tumultuous final year of high school, Peter Mandel needs a break. It's the summer of 1991, and his secret relationship with his ‘best friend’ Adam Algedi is put on hold as Adam goes away to Italy for the summer. On the cusp of adulthood, Peter has a couple of months to explore who he is without Adam at his side.

Enter Daniel McPeak, a slightly older, out, responsible college guy with a posse of gay friends and an attraction for Peter. Drawn into the brave new world of the local gay club, Peter embarks on a whirlwind of experiences—good and bad—which culminate in a hotel room where he has to make the ultimate choice.

But Adam will come back eventually, and there are promises that have to be kept. As autumn draws near and college awaits, can Peter break free of the binds of twisted first love? And what exactly is Daniel's role in his life - a brief temptation, or something more?

Join Peter in the second book of this four-part coming of age series as he struggles to love and be loved, and grow into a gay man worthy of his own respect.

Excerpt

The stool next to me wasn’t empty for long. Minty dropped onto it, his purple tutu rubbing against my chinos and his thin, white arms curled up to rest on the bar. He stared at me for a long, curious second. “I’ve met you before, right?”

“Yeah.” I shook off my disappointment and gave him my attention. “Last spring, up on campus.”

“Did we fuck?”

I almost choked on my soda. “No.”

“Right.” Minty frowned. “Did I suck you off?”

I stared at him.

“Well?”

“My car was broken down,” I said slowly. “Daniel helped me.”

Minty grinned. “Oh, right! I remember now. You looked amazing that night. Made of moonbeams. Everyone was made of moonbeams.” He tilted his head. “You look all right now too.”

“Thanks?”

Minty laughed and fluffed his tutu. He turned away from me to hammer his fists on the bar. “Jolly Zima, Barry! Watermelon! Hit me!”

Barry rolled his eyes, but he pulled a Zima out from the fridge and popped the lid, then reached under the counter and came out with a watermelon Jolly Rancher, unwrapped it, and dropped it into the drink. Minty slapped three dollars down and took a dainty sip.

“Ah! Perfection!” He turned to me with his eyelashes lowered flirtatiously. “Anyway, back to what you were saying. We haven’t fucked yet?”

Startled, nervous laughter bubbled out of my mouth.

“Minty,” Barry said. “Drink your Zima and leave Peter alone.”

“Sure thing. You’re the boss.” Minty sighed and leaned toward me conspiratorially. “He won’t fuck me either. What’s a girl gotta do these days? I mean, I look good, don’t I?”

I looked him over—white, though scuffed, ballet slippers, purple tutu, toned, pale, lithe arms, and his made-up face. “Sure. You look really pretty.”

Minty grinned. “Aw, you know how to make a girl feel nice.”

“Didn’t I just see you downstairs with two guys, though?”

“Two? Please. That’s just a warm-up.” He sniffed.

Renée appeared at my side, dropping an arm around my shoulder. “Minty, doll baby, I need you backstage in an hour. You’re my naughty boy tonight.”

“Okay, but I want to wear my tutu.”

“You’ll be gorgeous.” Renée grabbed hold of Minty’s face and looked him over. “We need to put some eyelashes on you too.”

“And red lipstick.”

“Yes! Every man in this room will ache to be in that pert ass of yours.” She glanced at me and then back at Minty. “Except Peter here.”

“He catches?” Minty asked.

“Like Johnny Bench, baby.”

I didn’t like my positional preferences being discussed like it was any of their business, but I was mystified that Renée seemed so certain about it. Was there something about me that screamed loves it up the ass?

“How do you know who Johnny Bench is, woman?” Barry handed Renée a milky-looking drink topped with brown liquor.

“I listen!”

“I’ve never mentioned baseball to you and you know it.”

“Of course not. You’d never do that to me. Earl at Ringo Comics, though, he babbles on and on about it when he’s trying not to come. Earl says I catch like a pro.” She patted her ass.

Daniel was right last spring when he said Robert and Renée were the same but different people. Robert could be sassy and forthright about his sexual shenanigans, but raunchy details rarely left his mouth. My face burned.

“Hear, hear!” Minty cried, throwing back his head to draw a long swig from his Zima.

Barry frowned. It was the first time I’d seen Barry look even moderately unhappy about Renée—or Robert’s—indiscretions.

“What?” Renée asked defensively.

“Earl’s positive.” Barry’s gaze bore into her. “You used a condom?”

“Of course!” Renée licked her lips and shifted nervously to her other foot, her hip cocking out. “I always do. You know that.”

Minty bit his purple-painted thumbnail, eyes going distant. “I’m probably positive. I should get tested. My mom wants me to get tested.”

Barry nailed Minty and Renée with a frustrated glare. He reached under the counter and pulled out two condoms. Then his gaze shifted to me and he pulled out a third. “For fuck’s sake, use these. Every time. Every damn time.”

Renée stuffed the condom in her bra. Minty held it up in front of his face and then gave it a kiss before lifting up his tutu to tuck it into the waistband of his white briefs. Nodding, I pocketed the one Barry handed to me, even though I wasn’t going to need it. Adam was in Italy and the casual sex Minty and Renée played with was something I’d never risk.

Breaking the tension, the two guys Minty and Daniel had come upstairs with shoved into the space between us, ordering beers from Barry and slinging their arms around Minty’s shoulders or Renée’s waist.

“Who’s this?” asked the muscular, olive-toned one, dropping a kiss on Minty’s upturned cheek.

“Peter,” Minty said sweetly, like I was a cat he was fond of. “He knows Renée, Barry, and Daniel.”

“Ah.” The guy was handsome with bedroom eyes. Dark circles smudged beneath them, as if he’d just left a fistfight or he’d been crying his eyes out. Both thoughts twisted something up in me, a hand grabbing my heart and squeezing for a second. He looked like he needed a hug.

Minty caught me staring up at his friend. “He’s smarter than he looks,” he said, out of the blue, and I blinked in confusion. “And he likes to kiss more than fuck.”

“Okay?” I had no idea why Minty was telling me this.

“Oh, and he’s a big pussy cat when he’s in love.”

“Is he your boyfriend?”

“What?” Minty looked scandalized. “Of course not. That’s gross.” He grinned slyly. “He could be your boyfriend, though.”

I shook my head, and Minty laughed.

“Name’s Antonio,” the guy said, sticking out his hand. “Ignore him. He’s always trying to set me up with pretty bottoms. I keep telling him I’m not a top.”

Minty rolled his eyes. “You have to be a top. Have you looked in the mirror? Those eyes? That mouth? Your tough-guy pout? C’mon. Fuck me.”

Antonio sighed. “I only like to stick it in chicks. I’ve told you.” He tugged their Asian friend a little closer. “This one’s the top.”

I gulped club soda, unsure how to deal with a conversation with complete strangers about who liked what about butt sex.

“I forget you’re bisexual,” Minty said archly to Antonio. “You never bring girls around.”

Antonio snorted. “I love eating pussy, but nothing beats a cock up my ass.”

“Cheers!” Minty cried, toasting the sentiment.

Antonio went on. “Sometimes a man’s gotta make a choice about what he wants to pursue in life, and, well, I’m chasing dick.”

“Can’t blame you for that, man,” Barry said, nodding.

Minty grabbed their Asian friend’s tie and pulled him down close, saying to me, “This is Windy. With an ‘i’ in the middle and a ‘y’ on the end. And he tops like a champ.”

Windy kissed Minty’s cheek and winked at me.

Minty’s eyes narrowed. “Don’t ask where he’s from, it pisses him off.”

“Why would I ask him that?” I said, confused.

“People always want to know. ‘Are you from Japan? Or China?’” Minty rolled his eyes. “He’s from Vietnam.”

Windy shoved Minty hard enough to unseat him from his stool. “I’m from Kentucky, asshole.”

I sipped my club soda. “Kentucky’s nice. Horse farms. Bluegrass.”

Windy laughed.

Once Minty had righted himself, he gripped my shoulder and whisper-yelled into my ear, “Windy’s basically my best friend besides Daniel. We only fucked once.”

Windy corrected him again. “Twice, actually.”

“That’s how I know for sure he’s a great top. You should try him.”

“Um, no. Thank you. I’m good,” I babbled.

Windy laughed at me and then swept in and gave Minty a wet kiss on the mouth. I wasn’t sure if there was tongue or not. Breaking away, Windy grabbed Minty’s Zima and took a swallow from it.

“So, Minty and Windy, are those your real names?” I asked.

“Is your real name Peter?” Minty asked, his eyes narrowed.

“Yes?”

“Well, aren’t you lucky then?” He tossed head, lifted his hand dramatically, and Windy pulled him up from the stool. “To the dance floor!” He grabbed hold of my arm and tugged me up too. “Let’s show this crowd what gorgeous bitches we are!”
