Review: Arctic Fire by Keira Andrews

When two strangers are trapped in a blizzard, heat rises.

Haunted by what he lost in Afghanistan, Captain Jack Turner is at a crossroads. While the last place he wants to go is the Arctic, at least the routine mission gets him out from behind his new desk. But he starts off on the wrong foot with the Canadian Ranger guiding him across the forbidding and dangerous land, and Jack would rather be anywhere than sharing a tent with Sergeant Kin Carsen.

The Arctic is in Kin's blood, and he can't seem to leave the tundra behind. He wishes he could live openly as a gay man, but the North isn't as accepting as the rest of Canada. Although he's lonely, he loves his responsibility as a Ranger, patrolling the vast land he knows so well. But he's on unfamiliar ground with Jack, and when they're stranded alone by a blizzard, unexpected desire begins to burn. Soon they're in a struggle to survive, and all these strangers have is each other.

Arctic Fire is on the shorter side, but it still delivers everything I've come to expect from Keira Andrews.

Jack was put in a desk job after his last tour in Afghanistan. He wasn't meant for a desk job. He knows it and everyone around him knows it. So he was sent to the Arctic to review the situation there. He was assigned to work with a Canadian Ranger, Kin.

They got off on the wrong foot, mostly because Jack was Mr. Grumpy Gills and he didn't waste time letting Kin know that he thought this whole "job" was a waste of time. He put his foot in his mouth on more than one occasion. Oddly enough, it only made Jack even more likable. He didn't mean to be so disagreeable. He went through a lot during his last tour and experienced loss. So even though he was being a stinker, I felt for him. I felt that he didn't want to be the bitter person he'd become.

And he certainly didn't want the attraction he had with Kin to grow.

While on patrol, they end up being stuck out in the middle of nowhere due to a blizzard. I found this part of the story kind of fascinating. I am not one that enjoys cold weather. I hate being cold. So reading how the Inuit people survive the extreme cold was interesting. They were in a tent FFS! But Kin was so knowledgeable about the land and survival. He had all kinds of brilliant tricks. Not to mention his tricks with his tongue... being stuck in such close quarters was bound to lead to some sexytimes.

The tension wasn't off the charts or anything, but it was good and they were sexy. They definitely had some hot moments and some sweet ones. They talked and had some very honest conversations with each other about their pasts. Neither of which were very easy.

It ended on a sweet note. Things moved a little fast and there were some big decisions made. But they made sense with the story, especially for Jack. What did he have to lose? It's not like he was happy or really even living before he met Kin. He found his happy place and he went with it.

When I opened up Arctic Fire and plopped myself down to snuggle with this feel good read, I didn't get back up. I read it in one sitting. It is Keira Andrews, after all.
