As Long As It Takes

The wind whipped at Caleb’s clothes and hair as he waited.
Two hours had passed since he’d arrived at their spot. Two long, worry-inducing hours, and yet still he waited for Max to arrive.
The winter’s day had a bite to it, judging by the way people tugged their coats tight about them as they made their way home. Caleb felt none of it. Wolf blood ran thick in his veins, protecting him from the worst of it, but his concern for Max took all his focus. The sharp wind felt like nothing more than a soft caress as he scanned the streets, endlessly watching for that familiar face or silhouette.
The crowds blurred into one large mass of people, and Caleb’s chest grew tighter with each minute that ticked by.
Something had happened.
Had Max been discovered? Detained?
Maybe there’d been an accident? Unlikely but there was a reason he was over two hours late.
A little voice forced its way to the surface, despite Caleb’s attempts to crush it. “Maybe he’s changed his mind. Maybe he doesn’t think you’re worth losing his pack over?”
No.
Max would never change his mind.
He’d promised.
Caleb closed his eyes and let his head fall into his hands, heart sinking to his stomach.
Where are you, Max?
The minutes ticked by, each one as excruciating as the last, but then his head snapped up, senses alert.
A faint, barely there scent caught his attention and he stilled. Scenting the air again, he searched for it, groaning in frustration when it eluded him. Had he imagined it?
No, there it was again, stronger this time.
Hope unfurled inside him, big and bright, and he frantically searched the crowds for—
The scent of his lover, his mate, suddenly surrounded him as hands closed over his eyes, hot breath whispering at his ear.
“You won’t find me out there.” A kiss on his jaw and the slight scrape of teeth set Caleb’s heart racing.
“You’re late,” Caleb said, looking up into beautiful blue eyes as Max moved to stand in front of him. “I thought…” He couldn’t say it, did want to.
“That I wasn’t coming?” When Caleb nodded, Max crouched in front of him, taking hold of his hands. “I’ll always come for you.” He squeezed Caleb’s fingers. “Always.” Standing, he drew Caleb up with him and pulled him into his arms. “You’re everything, Caleb. My life is nothing without you in it.
“I love you.” Caleb ducked his head into the crook of Max’s neck, breathing in his scent, losing himself in it.
“I love you too.” Max stroked his hand through Caleb’s hair, and gripped the back of his neck, making him shiver.
They allowed themselves that moment to reconnect, to remind themselves what they were risking everything for. Then Max pulled back, hands on Caleb’s shoulders.
“We need to go.” He took Caleb’s hand, grip tight. “Ready?” His eyes said everything he hadn’t put into words. Ready to leave this life behind? Ready to start a new one with me?
Caleb smiled, hoping his answer was just as obvious. You’re all I need.  He nodded and slung his rucksack over his shoulder. “Let’s go”
