Guest Review: Step by Step by K.C. Wells

Jamie’s life is one big financial mess, and it really isn’t his fault. However, the last thing he expected to find in the library was a Good Samaritan. He might have been suspicious of Guy’s motives at first, but it soon becomes apparent that his savior is a good man who has been lucky in life and is looking to pay it forward. Guy being gay is not a problem. Jamie’s not interested… or so he thinks.

Guy is happy to help Jamie, and the two men get along fine. But when Jamie’s curiosity leads him from one thing to another, Guy finds himself looking at the young man with new eyes. What started out as a hand up is now something completely different….

Before I start, I need to gush.

Oh my gosh! How good was this book???? It might well be one of the best books I’ve ever read, that’s how good! I like my romance gay, low angst and smartly written. This is it.

Ok, our two main characters are Jamie, the over stressed financially crippled pre-law student, and Guy, the older, self made man, who has time and money to spare.

Jamie is in the library, on the phone to his (IMO terrible) father with more financial bad news. Jamie has lost one of his three jobs that very morning, and as he hears more from dear old dad, his landlord texts to say his three-months late rent is still owed and he is about to become homeless. And you thought you were having a bad day!

Enter Guy, who is in a position to help, and on being the recipient of life-changing help when he was in a similar situation to Jamie, has determined that he’ll pay it forward.

I have to interrupt myself (!) to say I love this as a premise. The pay it forward mentality is one of my favourites, and that being how these men meet warms my heart.

Anyway, back to our tale… Guy makes Jamie an offer that seems far too good to be true, but is in fact the best thing that has ever happened to him! Jamie doubts Guy’s sincerity at the start, but Guy is really decent about it. What starts out as a roommate situation quickly becomes more, but Jamie (the ‘straight’ one) and Guy hold back and act nicely. Our men hit it off immediately, and even Guy’s daughter Carla likes Jamie from the first meeting. There is of course the asshole homophobic son Patrick to mess things up, but our guys cope with him with grace and strength that is laudable.

The kiss on Jamie’s birthday was so very hot, but of course it strained things. The other seriously hot scene was the dildo. Oh My Gosh. Get a glass of iced water ready for when you read that bit…

One of the main strengths of this story is the lovely communication between these men. They have the tough conversations, and although there is some hiding and avoiding, they both tackled it. I loved that. Having little misunderstandings on the path to true love is inevitable but the emotional maturity of an almost virgin, and older man who’s had his fair share of heartache and loss was wonderful. The supporting cast are great, and I’m aching to read Ryan’s and Cole’s stories.

Their path to happiness was not entirely smooth for Jamie and Guy, but there is a superb happy ending and one of the best epilogues I’ve read recently. The whole package was just that, this book has it all, beautifully written too. I urge you all, get this one as soon as you can!

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
