A Note from Thursday Euclid . . . .
As a queer trans man, I'm all too aware of the body image expectations put forward by society. I'm overweight and have been all my life, but usually when I write a character, I'm experiencing a kind of wish fulfillment. He can be beautiful in a way I'm not, live a happy ending I only wish I could experience. This time, with Wyatt's Recipes for Wooing Rock Stars, I went a different route.
It was Clancy's idea to write a bear, but it was my job to bring big, protective, perma-single Wyatt Parker to life while Clancy brought the sexy, lonely Tully Randolph into vivid reality. Putting some of my own insecurities and vulnerabilities on the page took a toll on my courage. The writing process wasn't the usual joy of exploration and escapism. Instead, I had to consider parts of myself I've never called on before and deal with negative body image issues I had within myself.
But in the end, as frustrating as it was being that narratively honest, writing Wyatt empowered me. Seeing him begin to believe in the possibility of his happiness helped me believe in my own. I hope readers will find the same joy in reading about someone society sees as unworthy of a rock star's desire...who ultimately woos his impossible crush just by being himself and finds a happy ending.
