Review: The Captain and the Squire (The Captivating Captains #5) by Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead

Tarquin Bough is a tweedy squire with an ambitious fiancée who controls his every move. He’s also the owner of the finest collection of saucy artefacts in the world. From Christine Keeler’s eyelash to the Virgin Queen’s dildo, they’re all safe in Tarquin’s care.

Christopher Hardacre is a city-slicker with the tighest jodhpurs and the most smackable bottom in London. He’s given up the ratrace for a country life as captain of the village rowing team. The only trouble is, he’s lost his money to a ruthless scam and Bough Bottoms is his last hope of a home.

But Chris hasn’t reckoned on his late uncle’s will. The house comes with a sitting porcine tenant and if Chris can’t look after his newly-acquired pet pig, he’ll lose his inheritance and his last chance at happiness.

When Tarquin sees Chris it’s lust at first sight, but dare he be honest about his feelings in a village where being gay is bound to be a hot topic? As soon as Chris and Tarquin get together, it’s the hottest summer this little corner of England has ever known.

With a scheming local hotshot out to turn the beloved pig into sausages, can the captain and the squire save everybody’s bacon?

The Captain and the Squire is a total kick. The language is fun, the banter is deliciously dirty and the MC’s are just amusingly quirky. Tarquin and Christopher begin their relationship as enemies, but really don’t take long to delve into some mildly kinky games involving spanking and some right proper saucy talk. I loved the page time the two shared when they were on the same page and were shutting out the rest of Bough Bottoms.

Tarq’s family has a collection of sexual artifacts and he continues on in search of acquisitions. Chris will inherit his uncle’s estate if he can convince the Oracle of Delphi, his uncle’s pet pig to become his own beloved pet. The Oracle has been residing with Tarqs after the uncle’s death and thankfully Tarqs and Chris have become friends and then some so Chris can spend quality time singing show tunes to The Oracle.

Tarquin and Christopher are a match physically and emotionally. As much as I loved their dirty little games, who doesn’t love a man going commando in tight jodhpurs preparing for a little spanking action, I also loved the ridiculous amount of fluff the two threw each others way. Once they moved past just the physical and started falling for each other and contemplating the L word, they were adorably sappy and it wouldn’t have worked for just any characters, but it certainly worked for them.

I do believe I liked the story more than 3 hearts worth, but cheating is my no-fly zone in stories and the fact that Tarquin and Petunia were engaged for most of the story really bothered me. I could see them being engaged at the start and breaking things off, but they didn’t, Tarquin was committing to marrying that bitch even after he and Chris were soooo obviously in love.

Tarquin didn’t love his fiance and vice versa, they didn’t even like each other. She treated yTarquin horribly and I lost respect for him for taking that nonsense, whether Chris was in his life or not. When Tarq and Chris have their ultimatum/miscommunication moment I wanted to choke my Kindle. I was all, “Dammit Tarq, you stupid hamster! Human up, get your shit together and clean house!” Not even for Chris, but for his own damn sake. The fact that Chris was paying the price for Tarqs epic level of stupid was so annoying.

I get the engagement was a plot point, and necessary for the “mystery” but it detracted from Chris and Tarq for me and that was the party I showed up for, the rest could have been replaced with something less offputting than infidelity.

Thank jeebus for a righteous ending and an even better epilogue. I do believe, in the end, The Oracle is the ultimate hero of this story, but I am ever so thankful that Tarq pulled it together and that Chris is the forgiving sort in the name of love and floggings.

Levi's best friend, Adam, has always been larger than life: a smoking-hot billionaire hotelier with imposing charm. When Manhattan stops being big enough for both of them—at least if Levi ever wants to fall out of love with Adam—Levi accepts a job in in San Francisco.
But when Adam pulls an Adam—upending Levi's calm new life with a plea to lend his photography talent to a worthy cause—Levi is helpless to resist. Adam will be the first Fortune 100 CEO to come out of the closet in grand fashion. He needs a trusted ally on his PR team. And he only needs Levi to help for three weeks.
Levi accepts on one hidden condition: he’ll keep his new friends away from Adam, certain that if they get a whiff, they'll fall under Adam’s spell. Bent on keeping his two lives separate, Levi barely makes it through the first two weeks unscathed.
Then, Adam drops another bomb….

“Leila and I broke up.”

The tip of Adam’s nose had begun to pink, and his cheeks were doing the same. Levi wished them back inside the airport, wished to divine whether Adam’s color owed to emotion or to the winter of San Francisco spring wind.

“When?” Levi blurted inelegantly.

Adam scanned. If they wanted to reach the limo line, they had to go to an outer curb across the street. Adam started walking and Levi kept in step, barely heeding traffic to study Adam’s face. On the crosswalk, Adam replied, “A couple months ago.”

Puzzlement pierced through Levi’s stark relief. It was stupid, the way he was happier when Adam was single. Such news delivered the same foolish rush of hope that swelled over Levi when one of his celebrity crushes filed for divorce or came out. So what if Adam broke up with his girlfriend or fine-ass Wentworth Miller came out of the closet? It didn’t mean Levi had a chance.

The color on Adam’s cheeks as he spoke his confession was definitely a blush of shame. What kind of best friend forgot to mention for “a couple of months” that it was Splitsville between him and the girl his father wanted him to marry?

“You wanted to tell me in person you broke up with your girlfriend? That’s your big news?”

Adam had the decency to look chagrined. “None of it has to do with her.”

“You’re being cryptic,” Levi pointed out. “Adam. What the hell is going on?”

Levi’s heart raced faster than it had when he’d merely believed his best friend, whom he’d nursed no small crush on over the years, had taken himself permanently off the market. But Adam was being weird—his Adam, the most shameless and least apologetic person Levi had ever met. Had he screwed up in Tehran and put the company in jeopardy? Lost his fortune? Committed a crime? And what was the favor? Did Adam need Levi to hide him in Argentina with his grandparents, or to donate a kidney? Oh God. Was Adam sick?

Adam looked over his shoulder, paranoid, as if he would be recognized at any moment. He was far from famous, but he’d had his share of press.

“Let’s talk about it in the limo,” Adam whispered, splitting his attention between placating Levi and signaling to the car bearing his hotel’s name. “It’s nothing bad. It’s just… not public yet.”

“What’s not public?” Levi pressed the moment the limo stopped at the curb.

Adam threw him a pointed look and sighed. “I’m coming out. Again.”

“Coming out of what?”

“It’s never going to work,” I answer dryly.

“Why not?” He blinks in surprise, looking concerned. “It’s not because he’s eating your shoes, is it?”

I snort a laugh and shake my head, my chest aching a little with how fucking much I actually do want things to work with Cole. More than I ever wanted things to work with Henry, and I planned to marry that mother fucker.

“He gets up at like five o’clock every morning, and he usually wakes me up with a blowjob or this fucking sexy, lazy, half asleep dry humping that’s just...ungh.”

“Wow, that sounds like a nightmare,” my best friend says sarcastically.

“We have different schedules, which is doom for a relationship,” I clarify. “And he likes baseball, he took me to a game last week and fed me overpriced snacks and then made out with me on the kiss cam like he had no fucking hang-ups about public affection or anything.”

“Stop, the horror is too much to bear.”

“I know,” I groan. “He’s gorgeous and fantastic in bed and supportive of my dreams; how am I supposed to keep from falling in love with him?”

“Um, you could not keep from falling in love with him,” he suggests.

I bite my lip and stare into the dark depths of my coffee mug. “I’m terrified he’s going to break my heart,” I confess.

“Isn’t that part of the deal, babe?” he asks. “Like, being in love is fucking amazing, but the tradeoff is that you constantly have to live with this gnawing worry in your stomach that it’s going to fall apart at any second.”

“It shouldn’t be like that though,” I argue. “I want to trust that he won’t leave, that he won’t rip my heart out and never look back.”

“Mmm,” he hums thoughtfully. “That would be nice. How do you suppose you get that?”

“Fuck if I know,” I sigh.

Blurb: Fifteen years ago Sammy Calloway disappeared on his way home from school. Now he’s back… or is he?

Boyd Maccabbee has spent his life second-guessing his actions on that fateful day. What if he’d done something differently? Maybe Sammy would have made it home safe and never become Cutters Gap’s most tragic famous son. Or would it have been Boyd who was never seen again? When the police find new evidence on the disappearance, Boyd hopes to finally get some answers.

The last thing Morgan Graves needs is to be dragged into some old case about a missing kid. He doesn’t know why police hit on his DNA, but he’s not Sammy Calloway. He thinks he’d remember being kidnapped.

He knows he’d remember firefighter Boyd.

Drawn into the complex web of suspicion, grief, and anger that has knit Cutters Gap together in the years since Sammy’s disappearance, Morgan struggles to hang on to himself when everyone already assumes they know him.

And somewhere, the truth about Sammy Calloway is waiting.

First of all, thank you so much for having me! I’m thrilled to be here with my new release Prodigal, the first in the Lost and Found trilogy. Prodigal is set years after the disappearance of a child in Cutter’s Gap left the town, and the people left behind, shattered. In ‘Feet of Clay’ I revisit Cutter’s Gap in the years between Sammy Calloway’s disappearance and the start of Prodigal.

I hope you enjoy it.

“We have a 10-42 out at the old Jenkins’ place,” Nat said over the radio, his voice sharp with annoyance. “Again. We need a car to go and break it up. MacKenzie?”
Mac hastily swallowed a mouthful of burger and pineapple. He wiped BBQ sauce off his fingers onto a napkin and thumbed the switch on the radio.
“MacKenzie,” he said. “I’ve got it.”
He wrapped the grease-stained paper around the half a burger he had left and stuffed it back into the take out bag. It wouldn’t be the first time he’d eaten his food cold, or not at all. His trash at home was a graveyard of take-out that started out so hopefully.
The quickest route out of town swung Mac past the school. He would have liked to blame the flicker of distraction as he glanced at the building on Masterton, but it was always the same. It was habit to play out one of the scenarios they’d had about what happened, to try and work out if there was something he’d missed.
If it had been Hill who’d taken Sammy from outside the school before his brother could get there, what would he have done next? The guy had no car, rode a bike to work -- had Sammy been somewhere in the school, been that close, when they started the search?
Or if Shay had collected his little brother…
Mac reached the end of the street and turned left. He left the speculation behind with the school, same as every time. It was the only way he could do his job. There were a dozen landmarks of the case, scattered through the town, that he couldn’t let go off. Someone, somewhere, had to have missed something and if he just...gnawed...at the facts long enough… But if they had, he would have too, and he couldn’t let it be all he thought of.
The Jenkins place had, briefly, been an alpaca farm.
It turned out that--like a lot of people--alpacas didn’t thrive in Cutter’s Gap. After a couple of lean years the Jenkins had tried to sell, gotten no buyers, and eventually just left the old farm to rot while they moved back up north.
These days it was a popular place for drug dealers and drunk kids. Sometimes they were the same people. Cutter’s Gap could be a hard place to get a foothold in.
Mac pulled up at the gate up to the farm. It had been chained shut by the department last time he’d been here, but it hung open now. The metal bars were bent and twisted, scraped with paint, and the chains had snapped.
Someone either didn’t care too much about their truck, or it wasn’t their truck.
Mac drove along the rutted old road to the house. A trashed pick-up pissed oil and gas onto the gravel, and a handful of other cars and a couple of motorbikes were parked around it. Mac could ID half the kids there by the cars. Small towns, long shifts.
He opened the car door. The almost physical thump of music made him wince as it hit him, all bass and cheap speaker distorted vocals. He hit the siren and left it wail as he grabbed the handheld speaker from the back and stalked up the rickety steps to the house.
“LAST CALL,” he said into the handset. About twenty kids--a handful of teenagers, a couple of college students--flinched at the sound and turned to see what he was doing. “TURN THAT OFF AND GET OUTSIDE. YOU’RE ALL TRESPASSING.”
The music cut out. A boy in a jeans and dreadlocks, voice cracked between baritone and tenor like he was three years younger than he was, yelled, “It’s the 12!”
Panic scattered the teens. They rolled off couches--and boyfriends--tossed down joints and raced for the door. Mac staggered as they hit him, a wall of weed and cheap whiskey sour youth, and turned to the side to them push past him. He walked over to stub out the joints on the carpet under his foot, a dozen new char marks on grey fibres, and registered the bag of pills spilled out on a coffee table.
Prescription bottles and blister packs, the loot from a raid on a dozen parental medicine cabinets. Ground up pills and broken open capsules littered the floor. Mac swore under his breath as he hooked the loudspeaker over his arm and pulled a pair of gloves out of his belt.
He carried the bag outside and held it up in the air.
“Anyone know anything about this?” he asked. A couple of kids shrugged. Most of them were trying to push his car out of the drive where it blocked their escape. Mac lifted the speaker to his mouth and barked, “HEY! WHO BROUGHT THESE TO PARTY?”
One lanky teenager slipped on the gravel and went down. A couple of the others turned around and looked shifty. Ben Anders there, Mac noted, was nearly twenty eight and definitely too old to be hanging out with high teenagers.
“Shay brought ‘em,” someone said. Everyone nodded. Two of them pointed as they added their agreement.
“Shay had them.”
“Shay brought the party favors.”
Aw, hell. Mac followed the fingers to where Shay Calloway was sprawled on the ground, shoulders braced against the flat tires of the wrecked pick-up. Twenty years old, nearly, and already such a screw up that everyone knew to blame him.
“You’re going to get your ass thrown in jail yet, Shay,” Mac said.
Shay shrugged and pushed his matted hair back from his face with the back of his hand. His t-shirt hung from a torn collar and his jeans were unbuttoned and barely hung up around his lean hips.
“Then at least you’ll have accomplished something with your career,” he said bitterly. Shay stuck both hands out in front of him, clumsily crossed at the wrist. “C’mon, Mackie. You’ve been dying to slap those cuffs on me for years. Take me away, for crimes against whatever…”
Shay tried to stand up and his jeans started to slide down. He grabbed at them to hitch then back up and measured the length of himself on the gravel. Grazes mottled his forearms red and shredded white as he folded them over the back of his head.
“Ow.”
Mac liked being a cop, most of the time. He was good at it, despite what everyone in town thought. Sometimes, though, he missed being able to call an idiot a fucking idiot.
He crunched over the drive and bent down to grab Shay’s arm and haul him back to his feet. Or up off his face, at least. Shay got half way there, on his knees with his hand cupped under his drizzling nose to catch the blood, when one of the handful of girls suddenly screamed.
“Lottie!” she screamed, voice shrill and nervous. Her heavy ponytail swung counterbalance as she tottered back and forth on wedge heeled sandals. “Where’s Lottie? I can’t find her!? Oh my god, Lottie! Where did she go?”

Reviewer: Shee Reader

Well, I just finished this one and it was delightful! Some parts were difficult to read (due to health issues in my family resonating) but it was just joyous, and the end was so, so lovely.

So, the story opens with Dr. Grant who is a giant pain in the ass who makes nurses cry! Lucky for us, that isn’t all there is about Grant and he turns out to be a straight talking, no nonsense sweetheart who falls in love with Leo’s daughter as much as Leo himself!

Leo is a charming character who has had some rotten luck in love and in life. (I think I’ll almost certainly need the movie star’s HEA at some point) but this story is superb.

The book is told in present time with full chapter flash-backs and that level of jumping back and forth is usually difficult for me to love, but I did really like how Leta did it. It wasn’t isolated scenes to tell a story is was more like told in dual time. There was angst and suspense but it wasn’t unbearable for a delicate flower like me!!

It’s super hard to report on this book without making terrible spoilers, I’m such a blabbermouth! Let’s just say, It’s completely awesome and you should read it. Okay? To clarify, I’ve already pre-ordered the set of 6 short stories about the Stay Lucky characters due out in February.

I was given a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Prince Owin
Being a fierce predator—not at all adorable, despite my graceful stature—the last thing I needed was a bodyguard. Especially a wolf shifter, whose presence alone was an insult to my princely principles. As Prince of the Ocelot Shifters, I prided myself on my infallible feline instincts, uncompromisable dignity, and flawless fashion sense. If having a canine follow me around at all times wasn’t bad enough, I now faced the most important moment of my entire life. The time had come to prove I was worthy of my crown. If only I could find a way to get rid of the pesky bodyguard.

Grimmwolf
When the King of All Shifters asked me to guard Prince Owin, I admit I had no idea what to expect. Cat shifters tend to be a little intense, not to mention kinda cranky. Owin was no exception, though he seemed crankier than most. Being his bodyguard was proving to be one of the greatest challenges of my life—but not nearly as great as convincing him there was something special between us. When Owin is faced with a perilous quest to prove his worth, I was determined to keep him safe, even if the same couldn’t be said of my heart.

Excerpt
“What the—” Grimm dropped the orb, and we both jumped back. To my utter disbelief, it spread upward and sideways until it was roughly the size of a large doorway, a forest appearing inside. “Hmm. What do you know? A portal that will take us where we want to go.”
How cross would the king be with me if I accidentally pushed Grimm off a cliff? Or left him with the Cù Sìth? Not like he didn’t have plenty of wolf shifters. What was one less in the grand scheme of things?

Grimm narrowed his eyes at me. “You’re not leaving me behind.”

How did he do that? “Are you sure you’re not a seer wolf?”

Grimm didn’t look impressed. “You’re right. I’m a seer. My curse is that I’m limited to visions of you being a jerk.”

I opened my mouth to respond, then thought better of it. “Can we just go?”

“As you wish, Your Highness.” He bowed and motioned for me to go ahead. Clearly, he thought I was an idiot.

“What if it’s a trap and I step through and burst into flames? You go first.”

“Your generosity knows no bounds, my liege. Fine. I’ll go first, but if I meet my demise, my blood is on your hands.”

I shrugged. “I’ll get over it.”

“So mean.” He shook his head at me and stepped through. On the other side, he turned and held his arms out. “See? All good. Wait….” He gasped and clutched at his chest. “What’s happening to me? It burns!”

“Grimm?” My heart lurched in my chest, and I stepped up to the portal.

“I can’t,” he gasped, falling to his knees. “I can’t….”

“Can’t what!” Oh my Goddess, oh my Goddess. I never expected him to actually burst into flames! I flailed around feeling utterly helpless. “What do I do? Is it flames? Are you bursting into flames?” I frantically looked around. “I don’t see a fire extinguisher!” Not that I knew how to use one. I’d just have to toss it at him and hope he could do it himself.

“I can’t….” He gasped for breath. “I can’t… believe you fell for that,” he said with a laugh.

“I’m going to kill you!” I darted into the portal, ignoring his laughter as he took off, his long legs putting him out of my reach in a heartbeat. “I hate you!”

“Admit it! You were worried about me,” he called out from across the field.

“Worried you’d die and I wouldn’t be able to pry the magic purse off your cold, dead, dog-smelling corpse!”

“It’s a satchel!”

Can the love they once shared be saved or has the pain of the past eclipsed it?

It’s been twenty years since Kye McLeod left the quaint little mountain town of Spruce Lake, Maine to play professional hockey. He’s had his share of ups and downs, but his choice to hit the big city and not look back has paid off handsomely. The future hall-of-famer is now ready to retire and come out of that dark closet he’s been sequestered in since his first secretive kiss with Davy Aguirre in high school. Now that he’s heading home to keep an eye on his feisty grandfather, there might be the chance to rekindle the flame between him and Davy.

Kye quickly learns that the boy he left behind isn’t the man he’s now knocking heads with. He always imagined grown-up Davy—who now insists on being called David—would be beyond the pain that Kye’s youthful blunder caused him, but now he’s not so sure. When the wildlife conservation officer squares off with the ex-hockey captain their connection is incendiary, and there are more than just fireworks. However, winning back the man he walked away from may not be as easy as he thought…
