Review: Moonstruck by Aleksandr Voinov & L.A. Witt

Anthony Rawson is screwed. Fans, producers, and his agent are all chomping at the bit for the next book in his wildly popular Triple Moon series, but he’s got epic writer’s block and is way behind deadline. Then he reads Axis Mundi, a fanfic novel by his online friend “SirMarrok.” It isn’t just a great story—it’s exactly what the series needs.

Samir Daoud is thrilled when “Ulfhedinn” wants to meet up after reading Axis Mundi. When Ulfhedinn turns out to be Anthony Rawson himself, Samir is starstruck. When Anthony tells him he wants to add Axis Mundi to the Triple Moon series, Samir is sure he’s being pranked. And when their online chemistry carries over—big-time—into real life, Samir is convinced it’s all too good to be true.

The problem is … it might be. The book deal, the sex, the money—everything is amazing. But fame isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and Samir is left wondering if Anthony really loves him, or just loves his book.

This 95,000-word novel has been previously published under a different title.

Moonstruck (if I’m not mistaken) is a revamped version of Lone Wolf. I didn’t read the original, but ‘Moonstruck’ works as a standalone removed from the series.

The book tells the love story of two authors - Anthony Rawson, author of a massively popular paranormal series with writer’s block, and Samir Daoud, a fanfic author and one of Anthony’s biggest fans.

When Anthony’s at his wits’ end trying to get the next book out, he comes up with an idea - to include Samir’s brilliant fanfic piece as the next book.

Of course, Samir wasn’t aware that his online friend was Anthony Rawson himself. But with a little persuasion, he’s down for the ride.

From the moment they meet in person, keeping their relationship strictly professional isn’t easy.

Their online friendship easily moves to IRL. I could appreciate this. I have some awesome online friends that I imagine I’d have a blast with IRL too!

But underneath that new in-person friendship, there’s also an undeniable tension between Samir and Anthony.

When they give in to it, it’s hot. Just a bit dirty, and sometimes a bit sweet.

The romance builds gradually as Samir and Anthony iron out the details of their professional partnership, and get freaky in the meantime.

This is where things didn’t really pan out for me - the romance and the professional stuff.

The romance isn’t exactly insta-love, but it’s quick and a lot of it rests on Anthony and Samir’s online friendship. Which is fine, but readers just have to take the two men at their word that their online friendship meant as much to them as it did.

I just didn’t really see the grand romance on-page, so it seemed rushed and luke-warm to me.

And the professional stuff. First, I had trouble believing that an author and his team/publisher would so easily integrate a fanfic author into a wildly popular series.

But more importantly - that whole side of the book bored me. The ironing out of details, the back and forth on the books, the fans, etc. It all took up a huge chunk of the book, and I just didn’t find it interesting.

Overall, this was an okay read. I liked the beginning of Samir and Anthony’s relationship, but by the end the lukewarm romance and all of the writing industry stuff just didn’t keep me interested.

Series Tour + Giveaway: Memory of Scorpions Series by Aleksandr Voinov

Author Aleksandr Voinov and IndiGo Promotions visit today with the Memory of Scorpions Series Tour! Learn more about the fantasy series and enter in the $25 Amazon gift card giveaway!

The Memory of Scorpions series is a gritty military fantasy featuring a very diverse, very queer cast of characters. Political drama, court intrigue, love, loyalty, betrayal and a plot driven story line that will keep you guessing right up to the very end. The beautiful covers were created by Anna Sikorska.

Scorpion, Book 1

You learn your wisest lessons from your enemies. Assuming, of course, you survive the encounter.
Kendras is a casualty of war: injured, penniless, and quite possibly the last surviving member of the only family he's ever known—the elite fighting force known as the Scorpions. When a steel-eyed stranger offers him medicine and shelter in exchange for submission and a secret task, Kendras has no choice but to accept. He is a Scorpion; he’ll do whatever it takes to survive.

But his true goal is to rebuild the Scorpions. Neither Steel’s possessive nature nor Kendras’s shattered foot can keep him from finding the last of his brothers... or the mysterious leader of the Scorpions, a man who held Kendras’s heart long before Steel tried to take it for himself. The goal is simple, the situation anything but. To rescue his leader and escape from Steel for good, Kendras must fight through a morass of politics and intrigue, where enemies are allies and even allies have hidden agendas.

Lying with Scorpions, Book 2

If you lie with scorpions, you’d better have a taste for poison.

Now that Kendras’s lover Adrastes has claimed the throne of Dalman, Kendras is tangled deeper than ever in politics and intrigue. As the new leader of the Scorpions and Adrastes’s one true friend, he and his men stand between Adrastes and those who wish him dead.

And many do. Adrastes openly challenges the ocean priesthood for power while establishing himself at court and brokering with the realm’s various factions. He means for the Scorpions to become a fearsome legion again, but Kendras must first learn how to be a good officer and recruit to replace the fallen. His choices will determine the future of a group steeped in hundreds of years of history and tradition.

As both Kendras and Adrastes settle old scores, a new enemy arises in Commander Graukar, a war hero loyal to the old order. In his formidable mountain fortress, Graukar may hold the balance of power. But while Adrastes aims to either rule or destroy Graukar, Kendras finds himself doubting Adrastes for the first time, and sharing more with Graukar than he ever thought possible.

A Taste for Poison, Book 3

Even the hand of a king is stung when it reaches for the scorpion.

After barely surviving an assassination attempt, King Adrastes is a changed man—one who mistrusts even his allies and friends. He readies his empire for war against an enigmatic enemy, the Elder of Vededrin, but not everyone approves. While courtiers dare only to whisper dissent, an outrider called Death foments rebellion in the mountains, aided by a prophecy that promises he’ll stop the Black King.

Kendras—former lover to Adrastes and leader of the Scorpions—is sent with his elite mercenary force to bring Death to justice. But when Kendras learns who’s hiding behind the mask, he must choose between his lover Graukar, newly appointed general to the king—and King Adrastes himself.

With no man to call master, the Scorpions could flee the danger and intrigue. But Kendras cannot abandon the man he once loved—or the man he’s growing to love—without first uncovering the real threat to the Empire.

Audiobook Review: Don't Let Go by Andrew Grey

Avery Rivers is a country music sensation, selling records by the millions and playing to sold-out crowds. But behind that persona is Robert, a burned-out musician cracking under the pressure. He’s unable to write any new songs, and he wants out of the business—at least for a while. He changes his appearance and finds honest, hard work in Jackson, Wyoming. Maybe getting to be a regular guy for a while will get him past his block.

Hy Whitely was a championship bull rider until he watched his best friend thrown in the arena and decided the rodeo circuit was no longer the place for him. He wants to be plain old Zeke for a while, and when he returns to his family ranch, he bumps right into Robert—a one-night stand from his last rodeo appearance who is now working there as a ranch hand.

The heat between the men could sear the grass off the range, but each one is hiding a secret. Robert and Zeke, the men behind the public images, fall in love, but can they hold on when Avery and Hy are pulled back into the spotlight?

Narrator: Jeff Gelder
Listening Length: 6 hrs and 18 mins

Reviewer: Shee Reviewer

Who doesn’t love a bit of the mistaken identity/double life romance?? In this case, both our lovely men are hiding who they are, or rather what they do for a living!

Avery is the hugely famous music star who needs a break from the pressure of touring to her his alter ego, Robert, find his music again, and Hy is the bull rider he sees at the rodeo. Zeke meets Robert and they have one wonderful night together but then he must get back on with the business of riding bulls and trying to win the PBR world championship.

Robert buys a truck and starts out on the road to finding himself and the beauty Zeke told him about in his home state of Wyoming. As Robert arrives in small town, he gets lunch and meets a rancher looking for a ranch hand. It’s like fate steps in so Robert accepts and guess who’s family ranch he’s working on??

I’m almost hugging myself with glee at this point, as Zeke comes home to help his dad and he finds Robert right there and twice as handsome as he remembers! With all the secrets, will these guys ever work it out?

You bet your life they do, this is an Andrew Grey book we are talking about!

Oh the lovely horse riding hard work, sexiness and secrets make this a glorious story and the ending is just as wonderful as I wanted it to be. Of course there’s the will they, wont they bit, but I like my romance low angst, and this is it.

The narration is just as superb as I’ve come to expect from Jeff Gelder. His smooth voice and charming delivery are just right for this story.

Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous!

Highly recommended!

EXCERPT
As soon as the door to his flat snicked shut behind him, Aiden was on his knees with his hands behind his back and his forehead on Master's closest boot. Aiden closed his eyes and took deep, slow breaths. He breathed in the smells of leather and shoe polish from Master's boots and used them to clear and center his mind.

Aiden knew that he would be there on his knees for as long as Master felt he needed to be. With each breath, his body relaxed, and his mind calmed. He didn't know how long he knelt there before Master nudged the toe of his boot up, giving Aiden the signal he needed to move. He kissed Master's boot and brought his hands around to unlace it.

As soon as the laces were undone, Master lifted his foot and allowed Aiden to remove the boot and then his sock. Master replaced his foot on the ground and then moved his other in front of Aiden. Aiden kissed his boot and then proceeded to unlace and remove the other boot and sock. Once both feet were naked and in front of Aiden, he leaned over and kissed the tops of each and nuzzled his nose on each one in turn. He loved the smell of Master. He could roll around in the smell all day long.

“Up, pup, and go get us some water.” Master stepped back and headed into the living room. Aiden stood up quickly and went into the simple open kitchen he had and got out two bottles of water from the fridge. He trailed after Master into the living room and put the bottles down on the side table next to the leather couch. Master stood in front of it expectantly, and Aiden obediently went to his knees in front of him and waited for Master's next command.

“Take off my pants.” Master's voice was calm and soothing. Aiden reached up and undid the buttons on his jeans and carefully removed them and then folded them and put them on a nearby chair. “Take off my shirt and then go get two of the big fluffy towels and your pillow.”

Milt Grabaur has left his life, home, and teaching career in Ohio to start anew. The Summer Winds trailer park in Palm Springs, butted up against the San Jacinto mountain range, seems the perfect place to forget the pain of nursing his beloved husband through Alzheimer’s and seeing him off on his final passage.

Billy Blue is a sexy California surfer type who once dreamed of being a singer but now works at Trader Joe’s and lives in his own trailer at Summer Winds. He’s focused on recovery from the alcoholism that put his dreams on hold.

When his new neighbor moves in, Billy falls for the gray-eyed man. His sadness and loneliness awaken something Billy’s never felt before—real love.

When a summer storm and flash flood jeopardize Milt’s home, Billy comes to the rescue, hoping the two men might get better acquainted… and maybe begin a new romance.

But Milt’s devotion to his late husband is strong, and he worries that acting on his attraction will be a betrayal.

Can they lay down their baggage and find out how redemptive love can be?

Blue Umbrella Sky is my first novel set in my new home of Palm Springs, California. The old song is true—it never rains in southern California, but when it does, it pours. A flash flood plays an unlikely Cupid in bringing our two main characters together, as you’ll see in the excerpt below.

EXCERPT: Boy Meets Boy

Worst of all, Milt watched the water hover just outside the sliding glass doors, waiting, perhaps, for an invitation to come inside.

Ah, the hell with it, the water seemed to say, why wait for an invitation? This party needs crashing!

And it began to seep in…. A little at first, and then faster and faster, until his entire floor was covered.

Milt involuntarily cried out, voice high-pitched and terrified, nothing like the butch forty-two-year-old he thought himself. “Help! Flood! Somebody, please!” The cry was pure panic. Logically, he knew no one would hear.

What that helper would do, Milt had no idea, but he simply wanted someone to be with him in his predicament. The thought flitted across his consciousness that he’d been here six months, and it wasn’t until today and the advent of a rainstorm of biblical proportions that he realized he didn’t want to be alone. He swore as warm water covered his bare feet at the exact moment his power went out, plunging his little sanctuary into murky dark.

And at this very unnerving moment, Milt realized—gratefully—someone just might have heard his pleas for help. There was a pounding at the back door, rattling the glass jalousie panes. He turned, confused for a moment—he’d cast himself as a sole survivor, a man against nature, alone.

The pounding continued. A voice. “Hey! You okay in there?”

Milt crossed the living room and the small galley kitchen to get to the back door. But when he opened it, there was no one there. The wind pushed at him, mocking, and the rain sent a drenching spray against him. Despite getting soaked, Milt leaned out, gripping the door’s frame with both hands for balance, and looked around.

Even though the covering of storm clouds had made it seem as though a dusky twilight had fallen, he could see that there was no one there.

He wondered if he’d imagined the knocking and the voice. He really didn’t know his neighbors, having kept to himself since he’d moved out here because he just wasn’t ready to connect with others again. He’d given so much to his Corky during those final tortured months…. Sometimes Milt felt he had nothing left to give anyone again ever.

And a dog, cowering and bashful as she might be, had been company enough.

His little reverie was shattered by a second round of knocking, this time at the sliding glass doors in his living room. “Okay, so I’m not hearing things.” Milt turned away from the back door and headed to the sliders.

Outside, a young man stood, drenched from head to toe, in a pair of neon-pink board shorts and, well, nothing else. Maybe there’s flip-flops. Milt couldn’t see the guy’s feet. His jaw dropped as he hurried to open the door. In spite of all that was going on—the storm, the flood, the risk of his home being destroyed—he couldn’t help his thoughts, notions he’d decided long ago died within him.

I am looking at an angel; that’s all there is to it. He’s going to sweep me away in those muscular arms, lifting me right up to heaven and setting me down gently next to my Corky.
Milt shook his head. A short burst of laughter escaped him, almost as if someone else were chuckling in his living room with him.

The guy was handsome, a tanned and buff dreamboat. Corky would have loved him, saying, once upon a time, that looks like this boy’s should be illegal, or at least sinful. Milt smiled.

Even though his hair was plastered to his head, Milt could tell it was thick and luxurious—right now the color of dark wheat, but Milt was certain that in dryer moments, it was as gold as the pure, unfiltered sunshine Milt had grown accustomed to being greeted by every morning. He had a body that made Milt, if only for a moment, forget the storm and the fact that he was a widower, still grieving nearly a year after losing his man. Muscles, smooth bronze skin, and a six-pack had the power of oblivion, of taking precedence over everything else.

Stop, he mentally chastised himself. He flung open the slider, noticing the rain had—at last—slowed to a patter and the winds had died down almost completely. Milt, though, couldn’t seem to put lips and tongue together to form a greeting or ask a question or to even say anything at all. His eyebrows came together like two caterpillars possessed of their own will.

“Hey there, man. I heard you calling out for help.” He jerked a thumb over his shoulder. “I live in the unit behind you.” He smiled, revealing electric-white teeth that made Milt’s thoughts go even more blank or even more lascivious, he wasn’t sure which. He shivered.

Review: Better Place (Rainbow Place #3) by Jay Northcote

Joe deserves better. Meeting Dylan helps him see that.

After a recent redundancy, Joe takes a few months off to try and make it as a writer. His partner, Harry, is less than supportive but Joe is used to that after ten years together, just like he’s used to Harry’s controlling nature and his drinking habit.

Dylan, a server at Rainbow Place, is fascinated by Joe as he sits in the café and works on his laptop. His attempts to flirt are met with awkwardness at first, but gradually Joe opens up. Dylan is disappointed when he learns Joe isn’t single. As their friendship develops he begins to worry about the nature of Joe’s relationship, especially when he witnesses Harry’s behaviour in person. Abuse isn’t always physical, and Dylan knows that from experience. His concern helps Joe see his relationship for what it is, and gives him the courage to end things with Harry.

Free to act on their mutual attraction, Joe and Dylan dive headlong into something that becomes serious fast. Joe revels in the passion and intimacy he’s been missing out on for so long, but Dylan is worried that Joe is on the rebound. He puts on the brakes, knowing that they need to slow down to make this last. For this new relationship to work, Joe needs to show Dylan that he’s ready to move on from the past.

Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone and has a satisfying happy ending.

I had to think about my rating for ‘Better Place’ for a bit. Some parts I liked, but ultimately I didn’t really connect to this book at all.

Dylan’s job at the Rainbow Place café is made even better by the quiet writer who becomes a regular. The server never misses an opportunity to awkwardly flirt with his favourite customer.

The customer in question, Joe, thinks Dylan’s sweet. But he’s focused on his writing. And, more importantly, Joe’s already taken.

From the beginning of the book, readers know what the score is: Joe’s partner Harry dictates Joe’s life. What Joe does, where Joe goes, how long Joe spends out of the house.

Everything revolves around douchebag Harry.

It may not be physical violence, but it’s an abusive toxic relationship just the same.

But pretty soon, the only thing Joe looks forward to are his short forays to Rainbow Place - where Dylan is.

Because while Joe’s clear to Dylan that nothing can happen between them, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t appreciate the friendship.

The two men find it easy to connect. Both have their demons, but with each other it’s only smiles and sweet moments.

And underneath it all, there’s a longing for something more.

This is where things didn’t really pan out for me - the “something more.” Because while we’re told that Joe and Dylan are falling madly for each other, the romance was so muted that I never really got a feel for it.

And another big issue was that there’s an ever-present third party - Harry. Though Joe breaks up with Harry about halfway through, Harry’s in the picture right until the end.

Harry’s constant presence in the story was distracting and depressing. The book was not so much about Joe and Dylan’s relationship, as it was about Joe escaping Harry.

By the end, I was pretty ambivalent. I was glad to see Dylan and Joe get their happy ending, but I’d already tuned out well before it.

Though book #3 wasn’t my favourite, I’d still recommend this series if you’re looking for romances that overcome the odds!

“I’m busy, Carmen. I don’t have time for your games.”
“You are never too busy for us.” She came to a stop before both of them, her gaze locked on Patrick’s face. “Come along, bastardo. You know better than to keep my master waiting.”
Patrick was mindful of the fact they were still in public and didn’t hesitate to conjure up a tiny mageglobe that nestled against his palm, mostly hidden from sight. He cast a silence ward through it, restricting the static to their area only. A bubble of quiet settled over them, his ears ringing from it.
“No, really,” Patrick demanded once it was safe to talk. “How did you find me?”
“How’s that dead body you found the other night?”
“The fuck do you mean by that? Is Lucien fucking with the werecreature community here?”
“He best not be,” Jono said in a flat voice full of leashed anger.
Carmen waved off his words. “We aren’t the ones dealing shine.”
Patrick snorted. “This time. It still doesn’t stop you from taking in the addicts.”
“When food shows up willing and free on our doorstep, we aren’t going to tell it no,” Carmen said derisively.
Carmen’s hand was a blur when she reached for him, but Jono was faster. He grabbed her hand in a way that made it look like they were romantically involved if one ignored the way they both sought to use their strength against the other to break bone.
“You don’t touch him,” Jono bit out, the threat in his voice easy for Patrick to make out.
Carmen smirked. “You might have claimed him, but he owes us. I’m sure you understand the price of a debt.”
“I understand Patrick isn’t going anywhere with you alone.”
Carmen raked her talons over the underside of Jono’s wrist as she wrenched her hand free, drawing blood. “We thought as much. Lucien is waiting, Patrick. Now be a good puppet and do as you are told.”
Fuck you,” Patrick ground out.
“If you like,” she practically purred, licking Jono’s blood off her fingers. “I doubt your wolf would approve.”

The action, mystery, and heat are kicked-up another gear in this second installment of Turner's addictive, original and immersive Soulbound series.

Book synopsis:

You can’t bargain with death if you’ve already sold your soul.

Special Agent Patrick Collins has been reassigned by the Supernatural Operations Agency to New York City. Learning to navigate his new relationship with Jonothon de Vere, the werewolf he’s now soulbound to, is nothing compared to dealing with territorial disputes between the vampires and werecreatures who call the five boroughs home. But the delicate treaties that have kept the preternatural world in check are fraying at the edges, and the fallout is spilling into the mundane world.

Manhattan’s club scene is overrun with the vampire drug known as shine and the subways have become a dumping ground for bodies. When the dead are revealed as missing werecreatures, Patrick and Jono find themselves entangled in pack politics twisted by vampire machinations.

Learning to trust each other comes with problems for both of them, and the gods with a stake in Patrick’s soul debt aren’t finished with him yet. Bound by promises they can’t break, Patrick and Jono must find a way to survive a threat that takes no prisoners and is stalking them relentlessly through the city streets.

Old and new betrayals are coming home to roost but the truth—buried in blood—is more poisonous than the lies being spun. Trying to outrun death is a nightmare—one Patrick may never wake up from.

Q&A with Hailey Turner:

What comes first, the plot or characters?
This is like the chicken or the egg question. For me, it’s a mixture of both. I feel my characters play off the plot, but I need the outline of the book and series to really create a character and their motives. Characters and plot are pretty intertwined when I create a book, so I can’t say one comes first above the other.

Describe a typical writing day.
I usually write in the morning and evenings around work on weekdays, and for a block of hours on the weekend around errands and time spent with friends and family. On weekdays, I get up early in the morning (I’m talking 5:00am here) to get some writing in before work. I try to make time to write every day otherwise it would be difficult to finish a book if I didn’t.

How do you come up with the titles to your books?
I like to have themes with my titles and they tend to have the same sort of word structure for the entire series. For my Metahuman Files series, the titles spoke to the missions in each book. For Soulbound, every title has a hint of the mythology I’ve incorporated into that particular book. It varies with every series but I honestly can’t start a book without a title.

About Hailey Turner:

Hailey Turner is big city girl who spoils her cats rotten and has a demanding day job that she loves, but not as much as she loves writing. She’s been writing since she was a young child and enjoys reading almost as much as creating a new story. Hailey loves stories with lots of action, gritty relationships, and an eventual HEA that satisfies the heart.

Review: A Lord to Love by Sara Dobie Bauer

During negotiations for a truce between the feuding Price and Morgan families, Lord John Morgan makes a shocking offer: he will give the Price family their land, in exchange for Harrison Price's hand in marriage.

John has long been enamored with Harrison, the beautiful son of his late rival. Harrison is nineteen, inexperienced, and known for being cold and bitingly brilliant. The union seems impossible, but John is determined to win the affections of his young obsession.

Will the frigid Harrison concede, or will the object of John's adoration leave him alone at the altar?

Really, just a lovely read.

Though this may be short, though not much happens, it still packed an emotional punch.

Just like the blurb says, Lord John Morgan has been enamored of the young and enigmatic Harrison Price, for several years, and he only wants to treasure Harrison and make him happy. When a feud between himself and Harrison’s now dead father can finally possibly be rectified, the only solution on the table John is willing to consider is marriage. Such an audacious request shocks all, not the least Harrison. There’s many dissenting opinions on both sides voicing why this union wouldn’t work, but what if???

Cue a desperate longing, a sweet courting, and a wholly romantic development of feelings with some very nice smexy. I read this in one go and sadly, it went by too quickly. If you want a feel good, AU historical romance that will surely make you sigh with contentment, then pick this gem up now and enjoy!
