Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit & Giveaway & A BIG Surprise - Lyn Gala

Today is a special day in the clubhouse. The whickering could be heard far and wide when Lyn Gala a.k.a.

Nice tat
*eyebrow waggle*

Agreed to stop by, answer some burning questions about the Claimings universe, GIVEAWAY the first two books to one lucky winner AND MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!! I wonder if you'll notice it...

1. How many pillows are required for a proper pillow nest?

A proper nest is going to have a lot of pillows, more as the Rownt gets older and the weight of the body starts to cause stress. So a youngling might be happy enough to sleep on the ground, and older Rownt are tough enough that a few nights won’t bother them, but as they age, they are more and more hedonistic with their beds. Ondry is still fairly young, so he’s going to have three or four enormous pillows at the bottom of the next, a half dozen medium sized body style pillows and maybe a dozen smaller pillows. Liam could swim in all the bedding.

2. Was there any particular experience/person/people who inspired Ondry &/or the Rownt?

I was having a conversation with some Livejournal friends about the fact that so many popular stories feature attractive alphaholes. I have a friend, Shawn, who is a real caretaker dom, and he was bemoaning the overrepresentation of aggressive dominants. I certainly know more doms who either want to take care of subs or challenge subs than I know doms who are the aggressive control freaks that are all over literature, including my own novel, Fettered. We started talking about what we would really want in a Dom and Ondry’s personality started to come clear. Part of that conversation was a discussion on the fact that aggressive doms were forgiven because they were attractive. So then I decided that Ondry wasn’t going to be attractive. When Liam fell in love, it would be love—not lust. So I decided to base the Rownt off turtles, and that is history… and the source of a freakishly large penis and long life.

3. Why tails? Tentacles seems to be a popular choice. So why tails? (Also thank you for the Rownt tail)

One freaky appendage is sexy in a controlled sort of way. Multiple tentacles seemed far more aggressive. Now aggressive can be sexy at times, but I knew from the first word that Liam had a past. He wasn’t going to react well to aggressive, so I decided to go with the tail instead of tentacles.

4. If Claimings was adapted into film, who would you choose to play Liam and Ondry?

With Ondry, I’m not sure it matter all that much who plays him as much as it would matter that the film had a really good makeup artist. He’s not human and I would never want him to lose that. As far as Liam goes, I would like to see Craig Olejnik from The Listener in that role. He is very good at playing the beta male—the sort of guy who starts by ducking his head and putting out sub vibes and ends up putting the bad guy in jail. Liam has that same sort of hidden strength.

I had to Google so I figured I'd save you all.
5. Will the D/s elements in their relationship be explored further?

I think these two will always be exploring new aspects of each other. I like the fact that both of them are so invested in each other that they don’t bring their needs to the table, leaving the other to explore the hidden sexual triggers. But the fact is, as long as Ondry is happy, Liam is going to feel pretty damn successful because he’s made his dom happy. Luckily they have a lot of years to discover each other’s hot spots. There will be experimentation and exploration in the future.

6. What can you tell us about the life expectancy of the Imshee and Anla, and the history of their interactions with the Rownt?

The Anla are a species with two very distinct forms. The ones with independent thought have life expectancies close to humans at fifty or sixty years. However, most Anla are followers, almost like worker bees. They live for twenty to thirty years. The Anla are very unpredictable and the groups are highly competitive with each other. Humans didn’t understand that, but they learned the hard way. The Rownt were slower about initiating contact, and they withdrew and put out a “no contact” order when they realized they couldn’t predict the Anla’s behavior. They are not comfortable with the unknown, which is why they really have not explored much of their universe. They will not have any contact with Anla.

The Imshee are completely different. They are a very old species that is more insectoid. They have skin so dark it almost appears a dull black with white mottling down the arms. Their eyes resemble glass that has been shattered—white with deep red veins traveling along it. Imshee have multiple legs and arms and have an exoskeleton. They don’t actually age, but they do eventually get tired of living and just stop. That means they always seek new challenges. The Rownt enjoy trading with Imshee because they have excellent technology and they are logical. The oldest Imshee may be as old as ten or twelve thousand years old, but that is remarkable rare. Many just get bored with life and die within the first hundred years or so before they develop enough skills to find interesting challenges.

7. We've gotten some information on how the Rownt view those two species, how do they view the Rownt?

The Anla are fascinated with the Rownt. They would love to have contact with them because they like the idea of status coming through competition. It fits well with how they see the world. They also resent that the Rownt treat them like children. They hoped that with humans they had a second chance to make contact with aliens, and the fact that one of the clans kidnapped human children has caused a lot of internal conflict in the Anla ranks. The Imshee are fascinated with anything that’s different, and they are fascinated with Rownt, although they don’t understand the Rownt desire for slow progress. They find Rownt fascinating because Rownt are logical and yet, to the Imshee way of seeing the world, they are illogical in their resistance to change. Imshee like interesting things, and they see Rownt as endlessly fascinating. I also think they’re going to like humans, and Imshee will be perfectly willing to cross Rownt space since they understand that Rownt are not territorial. So humans may soon get a visit from new neighbors.

8. Any hints as to what we can expect from the next book?

The new book is the end of the story arc that I originally planned with Liam. The events in the books have changed as I wrote since I am a “pantser” who writes by the seat of her pants. However, I always knew where Liam’s emotional journey was going, and this last book allows him to finally heal. Without Ondry I’m not sure he would have been strong enough to face the parts of his past that reappear in this book.

9. When you first wrote Claimings did you have any idea it would become as popular as it has?

I had no idea. None. I thought this was going to be one of those weird little novellas that no one would read or at least that no one would admit to reading. But then I’m horrible about predicting what people want.

***
And on that note, I have an announcement. The book has proved far more popular than I expected. So many people have asked to see more of their early relationship and several people have requested a paperback version they can hold in their hands. So I’ve done a deal with Loose Id. I added another twelve thousand words, and Loose Id is going to put the first book out in paperback. I have hopes that if it sells well, we might see more of the series available in paperback later.

10. Is Prarownt your version of utopia?

It’s not. With my allergies, I’m thinking that a rural planet with dirt roads and lots of nature would be a breathing nightmare. When everything blooms in town, it would be impossible to escape the pollen. However, I would love to take a long walk through the unspoiled nature and the wildlife would be absolutely wonderful, as long as I didn’t run into a kawt. So Prarownt is a wonderful place to visit but it might not be the best place to live—at least not for me.

Did you catch the announcement? Maybe I should've made it bigger...

Author Bio:

Lynsey "Lyn" Gala started writing in the back of her science notebook in third grade and hasn’t stopped since. Westerns starring men with shady pasts gave way to science fiction with questionable protagonists which eventually gave in to any story with a morally ambiguous character. Even the purest heroes have pain and loss and darkness in their hearts, and that’s where she likes to find her stories. Her characters seek to better themselves and find the happy ending (or happier anyway), but it’s writing the struggle that inspires her muse. When she isn’t writing, Lyn Gala teaches in New Mexico.

She first cut her teeth on fanfic: gen, slash, het, and femslash. She prefers to focus on plot: mysteries and monsters and disasters, oh my, but sex can and does happen. Some of her stories focus on power exchange, bondage or bdsm. In her worlds, tops and bottoms are all mature, consenting adults. In fact, stories where they aren't squick her badly, so don't expect to find abuse stories in her journal.

Liam loves his life as a linguist and trader on the Rownt homeworld, but he has ignored his heart and sexual needs for years. He won't risk letting anyone come too close because he won't risk letting anyone see his deeply submissive nature. For him, submission comes with pain. Life burned that lesson into his soul from a young age. This fear keeps him from noticing that the Rownt trader Ondry cares for him.

Ondry may not understand humans, but he recognizes a wounded soul, and his need to protect Liam is quickly outpacing his common sense. They may have laws, culture, and incompatible genitalia in their way, but Ondry knows that he can find a way to overcome all that if he can just overcome the ghosts of Liam's past. Only then can he take possession of a man he has grown to love.

Ondry and Liam have settled into a good life, but their trading is still tied up with humans, and humans are always messy. When political changes at the human base lead Ondry to attempt a difficult trade, the pair find themselves entangled in human affairs. Liam wants to help the people he left and the worlds being torn apart. He also wants to serve Ondry with not only the pleasures of the nest but also by bringing human profits.

Ondry has no hope of understanding human psychology in general, he only knows that he will hold onto his palteia with the last breath in his body, and he'd like to keep his status and his wealth too. Unfortunately, new humans bring new conflicts and he is not sure how to protect Liam. He does know one thing that humans seem to constantly forget—that the peaceful Rownt are predators and when their families are threatened, Rownt become deadly killers. Liam is his family, and Ondry will protect him with his last breath… assuming that he can recognize the dangers in time to do so.

Anniversary Shenanigans: Author Visit & Giveaway - Kaje Harper

You're not tired yet of partying are you? Because it feels like we're just getting started! Kaje Harper is here to grace us with her presents. Get ready to be amazed!

Kaleidoscope
by
Kaje Harper

I don't know what I expected from John's performance art. I've always kind of sneered at that. Y'know, people dressing up in logo tights and pretending to eat a tree, as a statement against consuming the environment. Shit like that. I figured it was a cheap way to mess around and say it was “art.”

But John came out on stage naked, his back to us. From speakers, all around the room, came whispers, sharp voices. All the slurs we know so well, from locker rooms and high school bathrooms, and from ministers and high-and-mighty politicians. “Queer!” “Faggot!” “Unnatural!” “Stay out of my space!” “Sinner.” And with each vicious word, someone dressed in a shadowsuit, crawling behind him, threw a paintbomb at his back. As the words assaulted our ears, the colors painted his back.

I felt sick. Because yeah— been there. But I'm a tough queer. I fought back when I had to. John… John's the sweetest man I've ever known. Solid and comfortable in his skin, but so kind… I guess I knew he'd have heard those words too, but this was like watching them branded into his skin. I wanted to go back in time, find everyone who'd ever said that to him, and beat them to a bloody pulp. I wanted to run onstage and cover his ears, and stand between him and the smacks and puffs of color marking his skin.

But then he spoke. He said, “I'm gay.” His voice was deep, resonant, unafraid. He reached behind himself, streaking his fingers through the chalk, smearing the colors farther across his hard, gym-carved muscles, across his thick, cut thighs, across that gorgeous ass. His fingers left trails of red, green, yellow, over his perfect skin.

He turned to face us. His front was colored too, painted in deliberate, glorious swirls of rainbow shades that framed his wide chest, trailed down his arms and legs, rose to flames of bright color on his cheekbones.

He smiled, wide and bright. His John-smile. He swept his gaze over us, and met my eyes. That bass voice warmed me deep inside as he said, “I'm gay. I'm loved. I'm beautiful.”

He is, all of those.

Author info:

I live in Minnesota, where the two seasons are Snow-removal and Road-repair, the mosquito is the state bird, and where sometimes in winter it can be breathtakingly beautiful. Of course, the deepfreeze chill contributes to the breath-taking, but Minnesota's a kindly, quiet place and it's home to me now. I've been writing for far longer than I care to admit (*whispers - forty years*), mostly for my own entertainment, and currently am focused on M/M romance (with added mystery, fantasy, history, SciFi...) I also have a few Young Adult stories released under the pen name Kira Harp.

My first professionally published book, Life Lessons, came out from MLR Press in May 2011. My husband finally convinced me that after all that time writing, I really should submit something, somewhere. I was thrilled when it was accepted. I have a weakness for closeted cops with honest hearts, and teachers who speak their minds, and I had fun writing the four novels and three freebie short stories in the series. I've been just delighted by the reception Mac and Tony have received.

My first free book became the first story that I actually released - I put it up a month before Life Lessons just for the fun of getting it out there. Lies and Consequences began as a reaction to the November 2010 election. It looked like the repeal of DADT might be derailed by the political shift and I put the insanity of that law into the book. Then as I was finishing the first draft in mid-December the repeal passed. Which was great, but prompted a rewrite to a lighter and more action/romance book. This was a solo effort and I learned a lot from writing and releasing it and from the reviews. Check Smashwords for that one and many of my other freebies.

I now have a decent backlist in ebooks and print, both free and professionally published. A complete list with links can be found on my Books page. This writing thing is addictive. So read, comment, tell me what you like and what you don't, and help me make the upcoming books even better.

Kaje is giving one lucky winner an Audible code for her popular story, Into Deep Waters:

For Jacob and Daniel, two young gay men aboard a Navy ship in WWII, the risks were high. Not just the risks of injury and death from Japanese planes and submarines, but the risk of discovery, of discharge, imprisonment or worse. Only a special kind of love was worth taking that chance. But from the moment Daniel met Jacob's eyes across a battle-scarred deck, he knew he had to try.

Being together required figuring out what it meant to be gay and in love with another man, in an era when they could be jailed or committed for admitting the desires of their hearts. On a ship at war, their relationship was measured in stolen moments and rare days of precious leave, with no guarantees there would be a tomorrow. And if they survived the war, they would need even more luck to keep their love alive through all the years to come.

Review: Breakaway (Scoring Chances #1) by Avon Gale

Drafted to play for the Jacksonville Sea Storm, an NHL affiliate, twenty-year-old Lane Courtnall’s future looks bright, apart from the awkwardness he feels as a gay man playing on a minor league hockey team. He's put his foot in his mouth a few times and alienated his teammates. Then, during a rivalry game, Lane throws off his gloves against Jared Shore, enforcer for the Savannah Renegades. It’s a strange way to begin a relationship.

Jared’s been playing minor league hockey for most of his career. He’s bisexual and doesn’t care if anyone knows. But he’s determined to avoid another love affair after the last one left him devastated. Out of nowhere a one-nighter with rookie Lane Courtnall gives him second thoughts. Lane reminds Jared why he loves the game and why love might be worth the risk. In turn, Jared hopes to show Lane how to be comfortable with himself on and off the ice. But they’re at different points in their careers, and both men will have to decide what they value most.

I'm a bit of a sports nut but hockey confuzzles me. As this very book will attest it's not a sport that's wildly popular in the South and it has some weird rules, IMO. I liken it to soccer which I've been watching more of lately. Mostly due to the increased likelihood of seeing something of this nature...

Also, how else would I have discovered the healing powers of Axe body spray? This is unbelievably useful information!

And this is just funny! Are there some sort of soccer acting awards? These guys deserve it. Because HILARIOUS!

So with all this entertainment making the jump to hockey should be easy peasy lemon squeeze-y, right? Buuuutttttt for a couple of things...

Exhibit A

And there being like zero chance of gif #1 happening with all the equipment hockey players wear.

Still, I do enjoy athletes and Avon Gale's writes. She's charmed me. Now she's officially proven herself a banter wizard. Wizardress? I would say witty banter but Lane leans heavily toward WTF?!?!-awkkkkkward than witty. However, I cannot stress enough how on point this dialogue is. It's relatable, organic, engaging and sucked me right into this story. I lost count of how many times I did that weird sudden cackle/bark laugh. Usually at something Lane thinks or says. Out loud.

Poor Lane has what I call The Gumball Mouth wherein whatever he thinks he says with virtually no filter. He's also 20 and has... is there a negative amount of life experience? It seems like he grew up in a bubble. He says the wrong things more often than not but he's so ardent and forthright that not liking him would be in the neighborhood of kicking a puppy.

And who does that?

Sex was great and Lane suddenly wanted everyone he knew to have it.

Lane is also still carrying his V-card and DYING to get it punched directly to Pound Town and out of semi-closeted virgin purgatory. Especially since he's confident he's going to be "awesome at sex". He is a natural. He even has some dirty talk going for him though it's still in the WTF?!?!-awkward-did-he-just-say-that?-needle-scratching-the-party-to-a-halt vein, but still. Earnest. It counts.

He and Jared do light up the pages with their flippery. And their guy antics which mostly include pillow fights, tossing gaming controls at one another and trying to avoid talking about feelings. They fail. They fail often. It's a delight.

Jared also plays hockey but unlike Lane, who's likely on his way to the NHL, he's in the twilight of his career in the ECHL. See, I learned something about hockey! Thanks Avon! I would still probably need the salt & pepper shaker explanation, though. Jared's got old wounds that need some TLC. And he's in love with Captain Awkward a.k.a. Lane Courtnall.

They fall pretty hard and fast for one another but I wouldn't classify it as instalove since we're privy to each of their perspective's through every step of their journey. Along the way we're introduced to their teammates, parents and friends. There are childhood wounds that get resolved with some strange parents but it wasn't overbearing. Mostly we get a bird's eye view of Lane growing into himself as well as the evolution from probable one night stand to HEA all of which gave me good feels. I'm pretty sure Lane will always be awkward but Jared is fully aware of what he's signing on for and does so unreservedly.

"I make jokes, but sometimes they're not funny," Lane told him helpfully.

I'm not sure how many books are planned for this series but there were people introduced that piqued my interest. I'm anxious to see where the series goes and, hopefully, check in on Jared and Lane periodically.

Highly recommend to hockey fans and readers who appreciate crisp dialogue with a healthy dose of humor.

Suit Yourself
by
Avon Gale

“Nice suit,” the man said when I entered the room, his chin tilted in defiance.

Seriously? This guy was naked and hanging from ropes in the ceiling, and he was being a smartass? Clearly it explained how he’d ended up in this situation. “Nice ropes,” I replied.

The guy attempted a shrug, which didn’t look easy to do in his position. “I’ve had better,” he said, twisting a little. I don’t know if he was showing off or just uncomfortable. “Little rough. Kinda chafing.”

“Tell us what we want to know, and we’ll get you some moisturizer,” I offered, stepping closer.

The man bared his teeth at me in a sneer. “I tell you anything, and you’ll give me a bullet. Don’t lie. I know how this works, Suit. I’ve seen movies.”

“Nothing says you have to go to your grave with chaffed wrists.” I took a moment to appreciate the sight of him, muscled and strung up like Christmas lights, his hair remarkably well-coiffed considering the mess he was in. “Now, I’m trying to help you, Mr…”

“Like I’m gonna tell you my name, if you don’t already know it.”

I reached out and patted him on the side of the face, his stubble a pleasant rasp against my skin. “We can dispense with the small talk -- and what comes after it -- if you just tell me what I want to know.”

“Which is, what, exactly?” The defiance was back, but he was clearly wary as I reached out to touch him -- showing him clearly who had the power here, and how it most assuredly wasn’t him. He was naked and vulnerable, and I was not.

I traced my fingers down his chest. The room was cold and his skin was startlingly warm against my bare fingers. “We have reason to believe you know the whereabouts of someone my organization would very much like to find. If you help us locate him, we don’t need to do anything more down here than talk.” I gestured toward the table behind me, on which lay a riding crop, a thin bamboo cane, and a few other implements I wouldn’t hesitate to make use of.

“What makes you think I know anyone involved in whatever shady shit you’ve got going on here, huh?” The man’s eyes flickered toward the table, and he shifted again in the ropes. The pull of his muscles beneath his skin was intoxicating. It wouldn’t be a hardship to watch him writhe in pain as I struck him with the crop, as I reddened that skin and heard him cry out. Not at all.

I smacked him lightly in the side of the face and made a tsking sound as I retrieved the crop with careful deliberation. “I think you will want to remember who has all the power in this situation, and it’s not you.” I set the edge of the crop on his collar, tracing lightly down his neck and lower, slowly, making it a tease. A few times I tapped it against his skin, not hard, but enough to get his attention. “I have a lot of persuasive methods at my disposal, and I --”

“William? Are you down there? I’m sorry to just let myself in like this, but I promised Rosemary I’d pick up those documents for her, and I saw your car in the driveway but you didn’t answer your phone.”

A pause, as both myself and my prisoner realized we’d been interrupted.

“So much for our middle-of-day hot interrogation scene,” Josh muttered, sounding utterly put out. He scowled. “Did you really have to give your assistant a key to our house?”

I ignored Josh and went to the foot of the basement stairs, tapping the crop against my thigh in annoyance. “They’re in the office on the desk,” I called to Anthony. “I’m just taking care of a few...household projects...over my lunch hour.”

There was a pause, and then my clueless assistant said, “In the...basement?”

“Seriously, Will,” Josh grumbled, looking longingly at the crop. “Maybe just let him come down here and see what we’re doing. That’ll keep him from using that key ever again.”

Josh wasn’t wrong about that. Anthony was twenty-three and stopped singing along to songs when a curse word showed up in the lyrics. Seeing my boyfriend tied up in our basement while we played interrogator-and-prisoner kinky sex games might shock him into a coma, and he was a good assistant. I’d had to fire the last three and wasn’t in the mood to look for another one.

“Just take the documents,” I replied, an edge in my voice. At least Josh would appreciate it, if not Anthony. Anthony got flustered when I spoke in that voice. Josh got hard.

“Tell him you’re going to be late,” Josh added in an undertone. “It’s going to be at least forty-five minutes until you break me. Maybe more.” His cock was starting to rise to attention. I reached out and traced it with the crop, smiling as he bit his lip to hold back a soft moan.

“Anthony, reschedule my two-thirty. I’m going to be a little late coming back from lunch.”

Once Anthony was gone, I turned back to Josh. “I’m sorry. You’re right. I should probably not have given him the key.”

“Or brought work home,” Josh added.

“Or brought work home,” I agreed. I stepped forward, reaching up to check the ropes attached to his wrists. “Are these really that uncomfortable? Because I can get the other ones that aren’t as rough. You said you wanted authentic, though, so--”

“Will,” Josh said, laughter in his voice. “Shut up and make me talk.”

This! This is why I've come to adore this author in such a short time.

Be sure to leave a comment to welcome Avon to the M/M neighborhood and let her know what you thought of her fic!

Author Bio:

Avon Gale wrote her first story at the age of seven, about a “Space Hat” hanging on a rack and waiting for that special person to come along and purchase it — even if it was a bit weirder than the other, more normal hats. Like all of Avon’s characters, the space hat did get its happily ever after — though she’s pretty sure it was with a unicorn. She likes to think her vocabulary has improved since then, but the theme of quirky people waiting for their perfect match is still one of her favorites.
Avon grew up in the southern United States, and now lives with her very patient husband in a liberal midwestern college town. By day, Avon is a hair stylist who loves her job, her clients, and the opportunity to spend her time being creative and making people happy and look fabulous.
When she’s not writing, she’s either doing some kind of craft project that makes a huge mess, reading, watching horror movies, listening to music or yelling at her favorite hockey team to get it together, already. Avon is always up for a road trip, adores Kentucky bourbon, thinks nothing is as stress relieving as a good rock concert and will never say no to candy.
At one point, Avon was the mayor of both Jazzercise and Lollicup on Foursquare. This tells you basically all you need to know about her as a person.
